...OHN GRIERSON
Thirty years ago next Saturday the Gloster-Whittle E.28/39
Pioneer, Britain's first jet-propelled aeroplane, made its
initial flight. As a "first" it had been pre-empted by Germany's
Heinkel 178 in 1939 and Italy's piston-engined ducted-fan
Campini Caproni N.I a year later. But it was the beginning
of the longest continuous line of turbine development, which
has virtually taken...

terminal figure of the second group.
The first jet aircraft to fly in Germany, and probably thefirst in the world, was the Heinkel 178, a shoulder-wing mono-
plane with an experimental Heinkel S3 turbo-jet unit installed
in the fuselage. This historic flight was made on August 27th,1930, four days before the Germans broke...

...he job. That the first flight was not a mere flash in
the pan was proved by the fact that within a fortnight
Jerry proceeded to do 14 more flights and complete ten
hours' flying (compared with the Heinkel 178, of which the
engine had blown up on its third flight).
My own connection with the E.28 came after the tragic
collision in a Typhoon which brought sudden death to Jerry
and left us all...

SIR,—In your foreword to John Grierson's fascinating
article on the Gloster-Whittle E.28/39, "Britain's
first jet aeroplane," you mentioned that as a "first"
it had been pre-empted by Germany's Heinkel 178
in 1939 and Italy's piston-engined ducted fan Campini
Caproni N.l a year later. There are two others you
appear to have overlooked.
One was the Heinkel 280, the world's first twin

... much about
the difficulties in his studies!). Yet Whittle was not the
first to make jet propulsion work. The credit for that
must go to Von Ohain and Max Hahn, whose turbojet,
the He-S3, powered the Heinkel 178 for the first time on
August 27, 1939, two years before a Whittle engine flew!
The Heinkel engine, though, did not run on a test-bed
until five months after Whittle's, so there is credit o...

... younger readers might assume from the capiion
"OFF GROUND AGAIN after twenty years" that the historicaircraft did not fly after 1941. It was, in fact, flying with various
powerplants until 1944. The Heinkel 178, incidentally, first flewin 1939 and not 1940 as suggested in our leading article...

...he first successful jet-propelled flight cannot be contro-
verted, although both Germany and Italy had demonstrated the
possibility earlier. On August 27th, 1939, the day Germany
moved into Poland, a Heinkel 178 powered by a simple turbojet
designed by H. von Ohain was flown, but crashed in about
fifteen minutes. The .sponsors were discouraged, war require-
ments intervened, and it was not until J...
