Messerschmitt 262 v. Meteor
SIR,—Mr I. A. Anderson, in Flight for July 26, raised
the subject of the "operational status" of the Me262,
and queried the dates at which the Me262 and the
Meteor became operational.
In regard to the background of the Me262, the best
history I have read on this machine was an article by

contest the statement that the first Allied fighter to claim a

The Meteor was due to progress through the usual
experimental, development and operational trials, but
very early on we 'received Intelligence reports regarding
the possible menace of the Me262. We were already in
trouble with trying to maintain fighter superiority with
the Focke-Wulf 190, and the thought of an operational
German jet was more than disturbing.
It thus became patently ob...

...ing a single attack.High-ranking U.S.A.F. officers stated then that it would have
taken the Allies three years to develop a comparative fighter. The advice given to Allied bomber pilots was to let the Me262
approach to as close as 1,000 yards, and then to turn sharply, sothat the interceptor would be in front of the bomber, and thus
harmless. The inference is obvious.
