Ifiic^r It seems to me to be a moot point whether this inability to steer was mainly due to warped planes or to cross currents of air. If this failure to steer was caused by the latter, might not a device such as shown in sketch tend to keep a model on its course ? The device is intended to form an automatic rudder. In the rough sketch, A is the rudder, pivoted at B, which point is to the rear of the centre of A. At D, on each side of A, are fixed pieces of elastic, C, whose other ends are anchored to some convenient point, E, of the chassis, so as to be horizontal, and thus give a straight pull on either side. In a side wind the rudder, A, would turn on its pivot to a greater or less degree, the amount of move ment being governed by three considerations :—I. The force of the wind ; 2. The strength of the elastic ; 3. The propor tion of surface of A forward of the pivot to that in r«ar of it. The position of the pivot and strength of the rubber would have to be found by experi ment. The rubber is to be used to prevent the rudder being turned right round, and to bring it to a central position when there is no side wind. I do not know if this device has been suggested before, and if not I should be grateful for your opinion of its practicability. Thanking you in anticipation for an answer through the medium of your valuable paper. Hazlett Road, N.W. C. A. K. Cox. Simms Magnetos, &c. in U.S.A. WE learn that the Simms Magneto Co. has been incorporated in America with a capital of $1,000,000 for the purpose of manu facturing in that country (under the Simms patents) magnetos, distri butors, dual ignition, sparking plugs, and other electrical ignition apparatus and accessories. Mr. F. R. Simms has been elected president of this new company. MESSRS. SNOWDON AND SONS, of 427A, Norwood Road, S.E., draw our attention to the fact that they make a speciality of fire- proofing timber and fabric of every description. Among the materials which they have successfully treated may be mentioned, gun-cotton (for "flameless" celluloid), thatched roofs, match- boarding, tissue paper, and scenery of all kinds. MESSRS. J. HURLIN AND SON, the old-established coach- builders, of 191, Cambridge Road, E., inform us that they have added a department for the construction of aeroplanes, wood parts, fittings, &c. Extensive alterations have been carried out on the premises for the reception of work in hand with which they are very busy, the firm making a speciality of carrying out customers' designs to order.
