Dunne sends us the accom panying very inter esting tracing off an old brass snuff box dated when the steam engine was first used in England. This has reached Lieut. Dunne from Mrs. Billings, of Kilner Park, Uiver- stone, in -whose pos session the original snuff box is. OCTOBER 25, 1913. CORRESPONDENCE. Bending or Distortion. [1802] Has any correspondent in this " problem " noticed that the inside wing shows the bending, in the outside wing as near as can be seen there is none ? Now if it was a case of bending under head resistance, would not the outside wing be the bent one owing to the fact that that wing is moving considerably faster than the inside in rounding the pylon and therefore should receive more resistance ? Waltham Abbey. ?• Moss. The Theory of the Dunne Aeroplane. [1803] May I add a few words to my letter on this subject which appeared in last week's FLIGHT. It seems equally impossible for this " reserve tangential" effect to occur temporarily. This would imply that in some manner energy which had already been expended by the aeroplane was stored up and returned to it at the critical period. Now the energy cannot be stored up in the wings of the aeroplane to any appreciable extent, as they are almost rigid. Nor can it be returned from the air; for the disturbance produced by the passage of the aeroplane extends but a very short distance in front of it, say a foot or two at most. This would be traversed in about J>J of a second, and in that short time no appreciable result could be produced. Practically the whole of the energy expended is left behind in the air to the rear, where the aeroplane cannot draw on it. J. H. HUME-ROTHERY. ® ® ® ® A Change of Name. MESSRS. BOUGIE, POGNON, LTD., have decided to shorten the name of the Hobson Pognon plug to Hobson plug, a name which will trip off the tongue much more easily than the old one. Also the name of the firm has been changed to H. M. Hobson, Ltd., 29, Vauxhall Bridge Road, S.W., but it should be remembered that the changes are of nomenclature only, the plug and the management remaining as heretofore. A Change of Address. THE British Deperdussin Aeroplane Co., Ltd. (in liquidation), has removed its offices from 39, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W.f to Clun House, Surrey Street, Strand, W.C., to which address all communications should now be sent. ® © REGISTERED.
