Competition.— The kite competition—for the most practical use to which kites can be put—took place at Wimbledon, on Nov. 29th. There was a good entry, and the methods demonstrated were : wireless, life line carrying and signalling. The judges, Major ft. Baden-Powell, Commander G. O. Stephenson, R.N., and Mr. (i. T. White, made the following awards: 1st, W. H. Akehurst, with wire less ; 2nd, H. Stewart, with signalling ; 3rd, R. Fox, life line carrying ; 4th, T. Gregg, life line carrying. Mr. Akehurst therefore won the silver trophy ; Mr. Stewart the team of kites, presented by Mr. A. Talbot, and Mr. Fox the Bronze Medal of the Association. Major B. Baden-Powell presented the prizes to the winners. The hon. sec., in demonstrating wireless, did so with the help of Mr. C. Ward. Demonstration.—A demonstration of kite and model flying was given during the afternoon, one member, Mr. L. Ingram, having two teams of five kites each up, which made a grand show, while Messrs. Houlberg, Louch, Chown and Latng were the most prominent amongst the modellists. Intheeveninga dinner was held at the Wimbledon Hill Hotel and a most enjoyable evening was spent, although the attendance was not what was expected. The hon. sec. was instructed to lay the suggestion before the council, that all the prizes should be given on one day and not after every meeting as at present, and that the trophies be held from the date of presentation. " Model Engineer" Meials, &c.—A meeting will be held at an early date to present these, and it is hoped that the date will be announced next week. 27, Victory Road, Wimbledon. W. H. AKEHURST, Hon. The Kite and Model Aeroplane Association. 11814] The Research Committee of the Kite and Model Aeroplane Association, which was founded February, 1909, and is the paramount body to govern model aeroplanes in this country, by agreement with the Royal Aero Club, desire to make known the facilities which exist for carrying out aeronautical research, and the inducements which it offers to young men to come forward as volunteers for the work. There is an Aerodynamical Laboratory founded by the generosity of Mr. Patrick Y. Alexander at East London College (University of London) ; Mr. W. F. Cooper of Watford has kindly offered to place a laboratory in Watford at the disposal of those desirious of working in that district; and Mr. Akehurst, our esteemed Hon. Sec, is working at the present time upon a scheme which he hopes will issue in the establishment of another laboratory in the West-End of London. The attention of patrons of scientific endeavours may be directed to this as a meritorious object for their helping hand. Aeronautics, as the youngest of the sciences, appeals especially to young scientists equipping themselves for a scientific career. There are the rewards of discovery, the triumphs of invention, the distinction of intellectual effort in a cause which still wears the atmosphere of novelty, and there is also the patriotic endeavour to keep one's country to the forefront in the new field of competition among the nations; all these are inducements which may be appreciated as well by the judgment of parents and guardians as by the enthusiasm DECEMBER 6, 1913. of students themselves. Any young man capable of adding *' grit," tenacity, and continuity of purpose to enthusiasm and ambition is almost certain to attain success. Those wishing to help in the work of the Research Committee should communicate with Mr. W. H. Akehurst, the Honorary Secretary of the Kite and Model Aeroplane Association, 27, Victory Road, Wimbledon. A. P. THURSTON, D.SC, Chairman of the Research Committee, Kite and Model Aeroplane Association. ® ® ® ® AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN. Official Notices.
