MARCH 9, I9'6- clips as indicated in the sketch. Whether to employ ailerons in the top plane only or in both planes is largely a matter of the peculiarities of the machine. Four ailerons, if they are of ordinary dimensions have, of course, the advantage of affording an ample margin of control, but, on the other hand, I have seen at least one biplane in which the area of these surfaces was so great that every time they were called into play the machine would drop perceptibly on account of the loss of sustain ing surface presented by the ailerons when in their nor mal position. As our machine has a comparatively high centre of gravity, and may therefore be expected to be fairly sensitive to the lateral controls, I suggest having them in the top plane only. In this case, therefore, a cable r/TiGHT] would pass from the crank lever on one side forward to a pulley on the front spar, across to another pulley on the other t >p plane, and hence to the corresponding crank lever on the other side. The operating cables would be taken from the under side of the aileron, over pulleys on the top of the lower wing and to the controls. In the drawings the rear portion of the top plare centre section has b^en left in place. As a matter of fact this will probably have to be cut away in order to facilitate ingress and egress to and from the pilot's seat. Although not being very graceful in appearance, this may be done by simply cutting away the rear portion of the ribs up to the back spar. (To be continued.) ® ® ® & riiuk'AiTSeruiQe ' PEP.
