JAKCARY 4, 1017. SIDE-WINDS. THE good relations existing between the Blackburn Aero-plane and Motor Co. and their employees were strikingly illus- trated at the dinner to their Leeds and Hull staffs which wasgiven by the firm at the Hotel Mctropole, Leeds, on December 20th. Mr. Blackburn, the Managing Director, who pre-sided, in replying to the toast of " The Firm," expressed his thanks to the staff and workpeople for their loyal co-operation,without which it would have been impossible for the business to have attained its present size and efficiency, and it wasto show their appreciation of the labour unselfishly put in and the long hoars unselfishly given by the staff and by the work-people, in order to ensure an output of work sufficient to satisfy the Admiralty and War Office, that the Directorsarranged the entertainment. Mr. Stuart Hirst, Chairman of the company, in proposing " His Majesty's Forces," referredto the splendid achievements of aircraft built by the firm and to certain records obtained by their seaplanes, which, he said, was a tribute to the designing ability of Mr. Blackburn as well as to the splendid workmanship, and finish, which hasbecome characteristic of Olympia. Among those contributing to the musical portion of the programme were Misses Black-burn, Tindale, and Bradley, and Messrs. Chapman, Hick, Fonntaine. B, Hill, P. W. Hardcastle, W. G. Griffiths, F.Wilkinson, and Millington. The Olympia Orchestra, which was some time ago recruited from the employees, and is a veryefficient combination, was responsible for the musical numbers during the course of the dinner, A UHIO.CE compliment has been paid to Mr. J. A. White-head, the founder and Governing Director of Whitehead Aircraft, by Mr. John Lane, who has dedicated his book ofquaint thymes—iirunts—not to mention the humorous scratches by " Chic," to Mr. Whitehead. The book ispublished4»y Messrs. Walbrook and Co., 13-15, Whitefriars Street, E.C. ••••• •*•'•— — THE canteen which it was mentioned in a recent articleMessrs. C. A. Vandervell and Co. were putting up for the accommodation of their employees at Acton, was openedsome time ago, and its catering power was put to the test on^ Saturday when Mrs. Vandervell entertained some 400wounded soldiers from Roehampton to a Christmas dinner with turkey and all good trimmings. The committee, whichruns the canteen, lent their aid, and not only did the men enjoy a really fine dinner served by the lady munitioneersin faultless style, but there was a splenflid variety entertain- ment, including Coram—and his young friend—Wee GcorgieWood, and several other well-known turns, which were much appreciated. To cap all, there was a high tea, which was alsodone full justice to. IN connection with Roehampton hospital, it may be men-tioned that the scheme of training men, who have had the misfortune to lose a limb, some definite trade which willenable them to earn a living is proving very successful, and it emerged that Messrs. Vandervell and Co. arc alreadyemploying some of the injured men, who have been trained in electrical work, and will take more as they come along. AN interesting .wedding took place on December 30th atSt. John the Evangelist, Notting Hill, W., when 2nd Lieut. R. A.-Walker, Royal West Kent Regiment, was married toMiss Ornis Ethel Kale Casson, the only daughter of Mr. William A. Casson, who is a director of the GeneralAeronautical Co. and the British Emaillite Co. INCLUDED in the annual winter sale of Messrs. Robinsonand Cleaver which commenced on Monday, and will continue through the month, at the showrooms at 152-170, RegentStreet, London, W., is a good range of " gear" for flying officers, whether in the R.N.A.S. or the R.F.C., as well as foraviators generally. Apart from the fact that the sale affords an opportunity for the male person to obtain any article formen's wear at reduced prices, it also is an opportunity to obtain useful presents for fair friends. There is a wide rangein liacn articles—a speciality of Messrs. Robinson and Cleaver —and the sale is an opportunity which should not beneglected, as the price of linens is still rising—a movement which is likely to continue. FROM the Lodge Sparking Plug Co., Rugby, comes a copyof their 1917 catalogue. Although the times are difficult to bring out a list of standard models with fixed prices, theCompany, feeling that it was very desirable, determined not only to publish such a list but to make it as complete aspossible, and to incorporate as much useful information on the subject as they could. There are therefore in thefront of the booklet chapters on " How to choose & plug." and "The design of plugs." which not only provide ananswer for the man who wonders why there are so many different models on the market, but also explains clearlywhy one plug cannot b*' produced to answer all purposes. The new Lodge booklet makes it plain how much thedifferent models vary, for which purpose each is made and the particular results obtained with them. Any of our readerswho arc interested in ignition matters should make'n point of obtaining a copy. AN interesting presentation took place last week at theoffices of Messrs. Vickers' aviation department. Knights- bridge, on the occasion of the marriage of one of the drawingoflice staff, Mr. S. Jevons Davis, son of the R«v. 1). und Mrs. Davis, of 32, VVindermere Road, Muswell Hill, N., toMiss M. A. E. Poarson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pearson, of 41, Yerbury Road, Tufnell I'ark, N. The pre-sentation took the form of a large silver and cut glass cruet, together with an autograph cartoon of the bridegroom, which we publish on this page.
