Lieut. J. More resigns his commn.; May ro. SIDE-W1 MESSRS. LEO RIPAULT AND CO., manufacturers of the famous " Oleo " plugs, inform us that they are making very extensive arrangements to meet a large Peace-time demand, and they hope, during the coming season, with the cessation of War demand, to be in an excellent position to meet the requirements of all their pre-War friends. " Oleo " plugs will come back to the public with the same fine reputation for hard wear which they enjoyed before the War and splen didly upheld during four and a-half years of the most strenuous test War activities could subject them to. New lists and descriptive leaflets dealing with their post-War programme are, we understand, in course of preparation, but, in the meantime, Messrs. Leo Ripault and Co. would be glad to hear from all private enquirers wishing to fit their plugs again. WE are informed that Mr. W. Ewart Chester, F.R.G.S., has resigned his position as founder managing-director of the Davidson Co., Hammersmith, W., in order to enter the motor car business, and with this object in view he is developing a site at Hill Street, Richmond, to be known as the London Automobile Co., with West-End branch for the sale and distribution of motor vehicles, etc. THERE was a good gathering on Monday last at the works of Messrs. Robert Ingham Clark and Co., Stratford, E., the well-known makers of Britannia dope and varnishes, to inspect the various designs submitted in open competition for their new trade-mark. Of the 223 designs sent in, some showed remarkably good colouring and originality, but many had ignored the rules laid down, and in consequence had to suffer disqualification. The successful competitor (who received 50 votes as against the second best, 26) was J.Newbold Sanders, of Lancaster. A tour of inspection under the guidance of Mr. Ingham Clark, jun., and Mr. Hornsby, of the works, which cover some five to six acres and stand on the historic site of West Ham Abbey, proved very interesting and in cidentally showed the considerable amount of care and trouble taken to ensure that the excellence of Britannia dope and varnishes is maintained. MESSRS. BOULTON AND PAUL, of Norwich, were among the first to make use of aircraft for commercial purposes in connection with their business as contractors and engineers, which was established over a hundred years ago. The trip in question was made before noon on May 1, and re sulted in a good business deal. It appears that a Bury St. Edmund's firm was negotiating a contract for the extension of their premises which involved a large constructional engineering order and wished to consult a representative of Boulton and Paul. The sales manager had his time closely filled with numerous appointments and business, and although the journey from Norwich is a short one it would have con sumed the greater part of a business day to go to and fro and carry out the discussion. A Boulton and Paul "P. 6 " two-seater machine was called into service, the sales manager was embarked, and in 20 minutes was landed at Bury St. Edmund's. The machine used is one which Boulton and Paul have adopted as the cheapest and most convenient •for just such trips as the one instanced. It is fitted with a 90 h.p. R.A.F. engine, has a speed of over 100 miles per hour and carries fuel for a 300-mile flight. Its sound construction and stability were proved by this journey in bad weather, and these points, and the extraordinarily low selling price of ^600 all go to emphasise the suitability of the craft for such purposes. RELATIVES and others who wish to perpetuate the memory of flying officers who have given their lives in the War, by the erection of a bronze tablet or a piece of sculpture, may be recommended to communicate with Messrs. Young and Co., of 6, Queen Anne's Gate, Westminster, S.W. This firm are not only specialising in this type of work, but they are able to furnish artistic and original designs. 655
