On the other, the Dominion Premiers are taking a very close interest in the scheme submitted by the Agent-General for Tasmania for making use of the airships to establish an Empire air mail service, and report has it that they are very favourably disposed towards .the idea. There is another report going the rounds, which is to the effect that so convinced of the possibilities of the airship are the Americans that they are only .waiting until the end of the month and the handing over of the ships to the Disposal Board to purchase them out of hand. We do not think, however, that it will come to this. There will be no difficulty in securing all the required information. This has long ago been collected and collated by the Airships Branch of the Air Ministry, and is very complete indeed. The operating costs of the ships are known to the last fraction, and those most closely concerned are perfectly convinced that the ships can be made to pay commercially if they are given a chance. It begins to look now as though they would be given the opportunity to show what they can do, though there is still uncertainty. As a matter of fact, it has been stated categorically in one quarter that the airships are not to be scrapped, and in this connection an official communique which appears in this issue is a hopeful sign of its correctness.
