li 5?sssp>. JUNE 2, 1927 FLYING PROCEDURE ABROAD IT is very essential that private owners who contemplateenlarging their range of flight to the Continent should become conversant with the conditions that govern entry and exit tothe Continent and follow the alterations in procedure at the various foreign aerodromes as well as our own. At Le Bourgetwhen horizontal visibility is less than 1,000 m. or vertical visibility is less than 100 m. priority in taking off is given to anaeroplane equipped with wireless transmitting apparatus, and this machine acts as a guide, If it finds it impossibleto proceed with the flight the pilot must, within twenty minutes from the time of departure, inform the Le Bourget air stationof his decision by W/T, or must have landed again at the aerodrome. If this arrangement cannot be followed, anaeroplane not equipped with wireless is allowed to start and it must land again at the aerodrome within twentyminutes from the time of departure if the flight is not being proceeded with. If, at the end of twenty minutes theguiding aeroplane has not returned to the aerodrome and no message has been received, other machines will be allowedto take off in the order arranged by the C.A.T.O. When this arrangement is being followed, machines expected at Le Bourget will be informed by wireless and those which are notequipped with wireless will be informed by means of large circular ground sheets with the letter B in red on a whiteground. One of these is displayed on the signalling area at the Beauvais (-Tille) emergency ground, and the other onthat of the Saint-Quentin (-Roupy) emergency ground. Pilots who have to fly out of their course in order to find aclear zone are recommended to bear as far as possible to the right of such a clear zone but to keep at the regulationdistance from any officially recognised air route in order to avoid all risk of collision with an aircraft flying in the oppositedirection. The Spanish Ministry of Labour has issued a Royal Order which states that foreign aircraft authorisedby the Government to fly over the national territory will carry on board the corresponding written permit issued bythe authority whom the Ministry of State may appoint. The permit must state the period for which it is granted, theobject of the journey and the itinerary, together with the anticipated places of call, the distinguishing mark of theaircraft and the name of the pilot or the person in command. There has been a lack ot incident about the week's flying. Mr. Twemlowcelebrated his departure to the Isle of Man for the T.T. by putting in 3.! hrs. flying before he went. Owing to engine and machine overhauls coupledwith the attitude of our tyrannous nuance committee we are not entering any machines for the Newcastle meeting, which is very sad. Sundry trophies ofours are resting in their possession as the result of our last meeting and one would have liked to go and pinch a few of theirs in return. Anyway, here'swishing them a good show, Midland Aero Club, Ltd.REPORT for week ending May 28. — The total flying time was 23 hrs. 26 mins. Great signs of activity are to be found on the aerodrome as preparation?for the flying meeting are now well under way. A notable absentee is the Secretary, who is at present taking a rest. This rest has been forced uponhim by a visit to the dentist, but the latest reports say that he will be in his sanctum before the end of the Week. Yorkshire Aeroplane ClubREPORT for the week ending May 28.—Total flying time, 33 hrs. 50 mins.; solo flying, 18 hrs. 20 mins. ; dual instruction, 12 hrs. 20 mins. ; test flights,30 mins. ; joy rides, 2 hrs. 40 mins. Atcherley, Leech, R. K. Lax.On Monday Mr. Beck took one of our machines over to Scarborough, Where he was the guest of the Yorkshire Hussars in camp. Refreshed andinvigorated, he proceeded to sing for his supper, the Hussars aviating witfi tonsiderable verve and aplomb. We understand that Lord Grimthorpeand Mr. Nirth will be joining the club in consequence. , On Sunday Mr. Stack arrived on a Moth from Stag Lane in the course oia consumption trial. Mr. Stack's consumption was considerable. Many thanks to Lancashire for their few kind words in connection wiuiour flying time. We cannot agree, however, that the improvement i. solely due to the appointment of Mr. Beck. We are inclined rather u>attribute it to the fact that directors, tiring of a prolonged corresponaenu, had cut their losses recently and ordered a new wheel. We wish to take this opportunity of apologising publicly to Mr. ™for certain slurs cast upon his ability as a pilot in connection with his re"f flight from Woodford to Sherburn. On Thursday last Mr. Wilson, in "'course of his business, had occasion to visit Oxford to collect a Morns-cow, j- He flew down with Mr. Mann, under threat of excommunication » tbe.nr "':twas not returned in time for Saturday's flying. Friday dawned, witfl ru», rain and low cloud at Oxford. On ringing' up Sherburn they were u»oi"that the weather there Was fair and balmy. Whereupon they tooK inou,, , folded the wings of the Moth, put the tail up on the hood of the Vov" j'and set sail for a sunnier clime. At Banbury they paused aWO1'r, liOBS'refreshed, were inclined to take a more optimistic view of the flying c°n™, (i)jMoreover, the sun came out. The omens being favourable t''ev^r° ~<~ eytcombination into a suitable field, unfolded the Moth, and ""J^™,"', t'hatit back to Sherburn in the very creditable time of two hours, we ret- a pilot of this initiative is hardly deserving of the strictures passea ihim in connection With bis previous epic flight. 356
