And, finally, it is of the utmost importance that whatever formula is chosen should be rational and should tend to encourage features of design known to be good. One machine appears to defy any formula that can be devised—the de Havilland " Tiger Moth." With a B.H.P. of 130, a wing span of 22-6 ft. i.e., span2 = 506) and a wing area of 76-5 sq. ft., this amazing little monoplane seems to be something quite out of the ordinary. Using the span2 formula suggested for this year, Vn = 260 x 130 = 165-2 m.p.h. On the " wing power " formula = 140 JANUARY 19, 1928 = 154-8 m.p.h. We do not know what is the minimum speed of the " Tiger Moth," but if it is assumed that this is 60 m.p.h. the maximum speed, according to Diehl's simplified formula, would be 20 x 60 Vmax. = — — = 161 m.p.h., •;/60 X 6-96 * assuming a loaded weight of 905 lbs. and a power loading of6-96 lb./hp. London-Cannes Air Service THE French Air Union announce that an air- service between London and Cannes will be opened on March 1. Air Service Over French Alps AN experimental extension of the Lyons-Geneva air ser- vice is to be carried out. Royal Air Force Memorial Fund THIS usual meeting of the Grants Sub-Committee was held on January 12. Lieut.-Comdr. H. E. Hall, C.B.E., M.I.C.E., M.I.M.E., Superintendent of Airship Production, has been appointed Chief Superintendent of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, as from April 1 next, in succession to Mr. W.
