FLIGHT, APRIL 25, 1929 «* Sqdn.-Ldr. Slatter O.B.E., D.S.C., D.F.C., R.A.F. flying the first metal makes a holiday trip " Bluebird " , . England to Durban GIPSY 85-100 HORSE POWER. THE ONLY BRITISH LIGHT AERO ENGINE TO HOLD OFFICIAL WORLD'S RECORDS World's Speed Record for single- seater light 'planes, Aug. 1927 (Tiger Moth); World's Altitude Record and World's Speed Record for two-seater light 'planes, July and December, 1928 (Gipsy Moth). Winner of King's Cup Race, 1928. Recently accom- plished 25,000 miles reliability tour with only routine attention. TVTEVER before has a new design received so dramatic a -^vindication as has the new all-metal Gipsy Bluebird. Fourteen days after the first experimental machine of this new type had been completed it left England for Africa on a holiday trip, piloted by Squadron- Leader Slatter, O.B.E., DSC, D.F.C., R.A.F. It arrived in Durban on April 15th, having completed the trip without incident or mishap. A more severe test of a new type could hardly be devised. The new Gipsy Bluebird is constructed throughout of metal. The famous Bluebird side - by - side seating is retained and a detachable coupe top is an optional extra. The new undercarriage eliminates rubber shock absorber cord, the folding wing design dispenses with jury struts, and two doors make the wide cockpit easy of access. Tail incidence is adjustable in flight and all models are fitted with cockpit warming apparatus. Control and per- formance is as revolutionary as the design. The Gipsy engine gives it a maximum speed of 109 m.p.h. The new all - metal Gipsy Bluebird is as modern as the hour. Here is the ideal of to-day's owner- flier.
