FLIGHT, MAY 16, 1929 I A LL those who have the foresight and real'se the vital part aviation •^ must play in our " Empire's " future prosperity and progress, will appreciate the very great need to increase the air-mindedness and aviation knowledge of the general public. This can only be accomplished by some form, or forms, of advertisement. UNDENIABLY, vast numbers of aerofoils flying overhead would be the finest form of publicity. This would be expensive, and although the number of planes is increasing, as yet there are millions of British citizens who do not see one from the beginning of the year to the end, and, consequently, are far from being air-minded. To over- come this lack of advertisement, a badge with an enigmatic but pleasantly conspicuous design has been evolved, w ich, if openly worn, is bound to arouse the curiosity of all perceiving. This object gained, in the course of time the viewer will naturally enquire the purpose of the badge; it will then be the pleasure of the wearer to expound the virtues of aviation and the exigency of the need for the public s full support. IT is not the habit of the average Britisher to draw attention to himself, and, consequently, there may be some inherent prejudice against wearing a badge. It is purely a matter of habit. All Ranks of the services wore or wear badges, and as this is not a matter of personal publicity, but one aiding a cause of very grave importance, although at first it will take a little moral courage, it is hoped, for the attention it will call, that this bias will be forgotten. As time proceeds, and the number of wearers increase, personal consciousness will be ended ; it is then that the scheme will have its full effect. AS the main idea is to show the average business man that there are very many, at least as intelligent as himself, who fly or otherwise support aviation, the Badges will only be sold to those of either sex whose personality, as far as it can be ascertained, will aid this object. ' AS a further aid, if a sufficient number of Badges be sold, general aviation propaganda will be carried out in the public as well as technical press.
