FLIGHT, JUNE 6, 1929 THE NEW "ARGOSY" INJour issue for March 14 last wegave some brief particulars of thenew and improved version of the Armstrong-Whitworth " Argosy " airliner, which is now being put into service by Imperial Airways. Thisweek we publish three photographs of one of these machines, in whichsome of the new features are shown. Our top illustration is a view oE thecomplete machine, from which it will be seen that the new " Argosy," ingeneral appearance, follows the original " Argosy " air liners which have beengiving such excellent service on the London-Continental air route duringthe last three years. Points of interest to note in this view are the neatengine cowlings, with Townend rings, and the Handley Page slots. The new " Argosies " are fitted withthree geared Armstrong-Siddeley " Jaguar " engines, resulting in agreatly improved performance. In- stalling the geared " Jaguars " notonly increases the cruising speed, but also enables the machine to carrya greater paying load. The cabin has accommodation for 20 passengers, 461 and when carrying fuel for 3Jhours, wireless and full passenger equipment, the machine has auseful load of 5,000 lbs. The cruising speed of this"Argosy " is 95 m.p.h., at which speed the petrol consumption is65 gallons per hour. The tanks— which may be seen, on the upperplane, in our top and bottom illustrations—have a capacity of360 gallons, which gives an endur- ance of 5$ hours. The machinecan take off with full load in 200 yards and will fly easily on anytwo engines at an altitude of 2.000 ft. We understand the controls areparticularly light and effective, and a point of interest in thisconnection is the fitting of servo control for the ailerons. Thisservo rudder, which is seen in the centre illustration, is mounted onthe lower plane as shown, and can be adjusted by the pilot. D 2
