FLIGHT, FEBRUARY 6, 1931 AIR TRANSPORT THE CANADIAN VICKERS "VANCOUVER II" FLYING BOAT r An Eight-Seater Machine for Air Transport Work SINCE we described (inour issue of Novem-ber 22, 1929) the " Van- couver, Mark I " flying boatproduced by Canadian Vic- kers, Ltd., of Montreal, theMark II model has made its appearance. The Mark IIis similar generally to the Mark I, but several modifi-cations and improvements have been introduced, re-sulting in better performance. The " Vancouver " is par-ticularly suitable for com- mercial air services onmedium routes, although it is primarily intended forforest-fire patrol work. In fact, five of these flyingboats (the Mark II) were built for the Department ofNational Defence, Ottawa, last year to replace obsoleteaircraft used by the Royal Canadian Air Force on forestfire patrol. Three of these machines were fitted withArmstrong Siddeley geared " Lynx " engines, and theother two with Canadian Wright J-6 300-h.p. engines. The machine is a twin-engined flying boat with accommodation for six pas-sengers and two pilots. The passenger accommodationconsists of a completely en- closed cabin provided withport-holes, while the pilot and mechanic are accommo-dated in cockpits in the forward part of the hullThe hull is entirely of metal construction, all frames andstringers, as well as the outer skin, being of duralumin. Entrance to the cabin isobtained from a rear hatch, and a connecting door isfitted giving access from the pilot's cockpit to the cabin.A hatch is provided in the extreme forward part of thehull for ease of mooring. The power plant consistsof two Wright J-6 300-h.p. engines. However, twoArmstrong-Siddeley geared " Lynx " engines or Prattand Whitney " Wasp " 400 h.p. engines can be in-stalled, if desired.
