FLIGHT, SEPTEMBER 11, 1931 GETTING OVER THE "HUMP": Fit. Lt. Stainforth taking off in S.1596. (FLIGHT Photo.) A large section of the British aviation community willwatch the contest from the White Star Liner Homeric, which will be anchored as close as possible to the westernturning point on Kyde Middle Shoal. The most difficult part of the contest to get access towill be the area set aside for the preliminary trials. This lies to the west of the Schneider course, and upon thewind direction on the day of the contest will depend where in this area the machines will take off and alight.Cowes and Calshot are the two points ashore likely to be most favourably situated for watching the preliminarytrials. The various anchorages set aside for the purpose will afford good views of the contest, and doubtless they will be crowded with vessels of all kinds and sizes, from the majestic ocean liner to the modest dinghy. Postponement In the case of unfavourable weather conditions onSaturday, September 12, the organisers may postpone the contest until Sunda ', September 13, and again untilMonday, September 14, and so forth until the weather is suitable. The Royal Aero Club has no authority, underthe international regulations, to postpone the race other than from day to day, and then only on account ofweather conditions. READY TOR LAUNCHING: S.1596 on one of the special pontoons used for transporting the machines from Calshot to the point of take-off. (FLIGHT Photo.) •(,.:
