A '' Bristol'' Pegasus " L " engine was recently subjected to a 50 hours' full throttle high speed test, developing 680 B.H.P. and running at 2,300 r.p.m. throughout, a speed of revolution 15 per cent, in excess of the rated speed. The conditions of the test were made more rigorous by the high temperature of the oil fed to the engine, which was not allowed to drop below 80° Centigrade. Despite these severe conditions the engine ran consistently well with a negligible drop in power throughout, and a comparison of the calibration curves taken before and immediately after the test show that the drop was under 2 per cent. It is of interest that the engine, prior to reconditioning for this test, had completed approximately 500 hours running on the bench and in flight, including two official type tests and a one hundred hours' flight test in a seaplane. This test was in accordance with the " Bristol" practice of submitting engines of each new series to a full throttle development test, believing that whereas the present standard Air Ministry type test forms a useful basis for establishing the relative performance and reliability of new types, an engine when fully developed should stand up to something more strenuous in order to ensure an ample margin of reserve. oovi+tHTtr*.
