Arcr 17, 1933 ADVERT1 YEMENIS. FLIGHT ^k The illustrations show :— (I) On the De Haviliand " Puss Moth." the engine cowling, seats, rudder and elevator tailing edges and window framework are of aluminium. For the Gipsy " Major " engine used in this machine, aluminium alloys were chosen for the main crankcase, pistons, connecting rods, various small die-castings, tappet guides, etc. ; aluminium bronze was employed for the cylinder heads ; Duralumin for the Fairey- Reid airscrew. (2) Blackburn " Iris V " flying boat ; fitted with Rolls-Royce " Buzzard " engine ; the machine construction is almost entirely of Duralumin, including the hull and floatr. 1.17.8.33. FROM SINGLE-SEATER TO FLYING BOAT . . . \A/HETHERfor fast individual * * travel or for the more ex acting requirements of heavy transport, the problem remains the same, namely, to obtain maximum ratio of power to total weight of machine. Hence the extensive use of aluminium and light aluminium alloys, at one end of thescale to get speed and at the other to obtain additional payload or a wider radius of action.
