1214 FLIGHT. NOVEMBER 15, 1934. The armament consists of two Vickers guns, i, 200 rounds of ammunition being carried, and racks are provided for four 20 lb. bombs. The equipment is very complete, and includes night-flying equipment, navigation lights, wireless reception and transmission apparatus, and oxygen equipment for high-altitude operation. Entry and exit are easy, the cockpit being fitted with large doors on each side, and hand grips being pro- vided. The cockpit itself is large, warm and free from draught. A Bristol " Mer- cury " VI S. engine is fitted, and is pro- vided with a Townend ring. This engine is fully supercharged, so that the " Gauntlet " has the remarkably high speed of 230 m.p.h. at 15,800 ft. Of quite recent introduction is the Gloster "F.7/30." This machine, a "Private Venture," has been built to conform to the latest requirements of. the British Air Ministry for a high-speed single-seater Day and Night Fighter. It is a direct development of the " Gaunt- > PRIVATE VENTURE": The Gloster F.7/30 ("Mercury" VIS.)Day and Night Fighter. let," and although it is not possible at present to publish full particulars, it can be stated that even with the same engine as that of the "Gauntlet," the perform- ance of the new machine is better in BRITISH KLEMM The Klemm monoplane was first introduced into England five years ago by MajorE. F. Stephen. The British Klenim Aeroplane Co., Ltd., has the sole manufacturing and selling rights for Great Britain and the British Dominions. A BSENCE of vices of any sort was •**• ever a prominent characteristic of Klemm monoplanes, and the British pro- ducts, although they differ somewhat in several respects from the German origi- nal, have retained this feature. At the present time two models have been stan- dardised: The "Eagle" cabin three- seater and the " Swallow" open two- seater. Wood is the chief structural material used in the Klemm " Eagle." The fuse- lage as well as the wings is covered with plywood, and the primary struc- ture inside both is also of wood. A very comfortable cabin is provided, with the pilot occupying a single seat in front, whence he has an excellent view, and the two passengers side by side behind. The wings of the "Eagle" are of the cantilever type, and are arranged to fold. The undercarriage is of wide track, and retracts into the wings by swinging the wheels outwards. In the raised position the wheels are fully housed in recesses in the wings. Two power plants have been stan- dardised: The de Havilland "Gipsy Major" of 130 h.p. and the "Gipsy every respect, although the gross weight is greater. Clean design has been aimed at, and the accompanying photograph indicates to what extent it has been achieved. Six " of 200 h.p. With the former, the machine cruises at 125 m.p.h., and with the latter the cruising speed is increased to about 148 m.p.h. Of lower power is the Klemm '' Swal- low," which is an open two-seater fitted with the 70-75 h.p. British Salm- son engine or the 75-80 h.p. Pobjoy " Cataract." The former model is 3olb. heavier than the latter, which means that for the same gross weight of 1,500 lb. the disposable load is smaller by that amount. Otherwise there is little difference between the two models. The " Swallow "is, like the " Eagle," of all-wood construction. The under- carriage does not retract, but is of low drag. The wings fold, and the machine is easily handled on the ground by one man. 1 BRITISH KLEMM "EAGLE" \ \ 130 h.p.
