FUNERAL OF KING GEORGE V The following message was sent by Viscount Swinton, Secretary of State for Air, to all Home Commands of the Royal Air Force, after King George's funeral: " I have it in Command from His Majesty the King to convey to all oflicers and men of the Air F"orces who partici pated in to-day's ceremonies his appreciation of the highly efficient manner in which they discharged their duties. His Majesty has further desired me to congratulate all ranks on their excellent appearance and bearing, which gave him great satisfaction.—SwiNTON." THE R.A.F. WREATH The Royal Air Force wreath at the funeral of King George V was composed of reproductions of Flanders poppies with the R.A.F. pilot's badge set out in gold in the centre. The wreath was taken on Saturday, January 25, to Windsor by an Air Force officer. A card accompanied the wreath bearing the following inscription: " A tribute of loyalty and affection from the Royal Air Force." CADETSHIPS FOR APPRENTICES The Air Ministry announces : — Ex-Aircraft Apprentices P. R. Hatfield, J. H. Lapsley, D. C. Maybury and 1 . Prestos, from No. 1 School of Technical Training (Apprentices) Halton, and Ex-Aircraft Apprentice C. E. K. Hind, from the Electrical and Wireless School, Cranwell, have been selected for cadetships at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, on the result of the examinations held on completion of their three years' training as aircraft apprentices. The " Viscount Wakefield " Scholarships, valued at £75 each, have been awarded to Flight Cadet J. B. Grant (on the result of the recent competitive examination for entry into the Royal Air Force College) and to Flight Cadet J. H. Lapsley. The " Hyde- Thomson " Memorial Prize, valued at £29, has been awarded to Flight Cadet C. E. K. Hind. R.N. SEAPLANE BASE, PORT SAID, REUNION The fourteenth annual reunion of the Old Comrades Association, R.N. Seaplane Base, Port Said, will be held in London on Satur day, February 15. Particulars may be obtained from Norman M. Williams, Esq., 16, Shrewsbury Avenue, East Sheen, S.W.14. FLYING ACCIDENT The Air Ministrv regrets to announce that Fit. Lt. Sylvanus George Connolly, Fit Lt. Philip Yaughan Fldwards, and L.A/C. Frank Campling lost their lives in an accident which occurred on January 27 to an R.A.F. aircraft near Port Sudan. NEW PILOTS Since May, 1935, the Air Ministry has up to January r8 accepted 760 short service pilot officers out of 4,boo genuine applications, and 205 airmen pilots out of 1,350 genuine applications. Taking the limits of the present expansion scheme as from May, 1Q 35. to March 31, 1937, the Air Ministry requires a total of 1,800 new pilots, of which about 25 per cent, may be airmen. As shown above, 9O5 of these have already been accepted. Under the temporary arrangements of the expansion scheme the S.S. officers engage for four years on the active list and six years on the Reserve. R.A.F. STAFF COLLEGE The following officers have satisfactorily completed the thirteenth course (1935) at the R.A.F.
