FLIGHT. 255 Private Flying FROM the CLUBS Events and Activity at the Clnbs and Schools TOLLBRTON F LYING at Tollerton, for the week ending February 27, again showed an increase, totalling over twenty hours. Fit. Lt. Linden became a flying member. REDHILL An impromptu bomb-dropping competition held last week was won by Mr. G. P. Sargent. Flying times totalled 41 hr. 55 min. LONDON Mr. E. R. Ker has joined the London Aeroplane Club and Mr. G. M. Tonge has gone solo. Fifty-eight hours were flown last week. C.A.S C. Last Sunday morning members of the Civil Aviation Service Corps flew 1 hr. 30 min. dual and 45 min. solo. The afternoon was devoted to lectures. PORTSMOUTH Messrs. A. P. Skinner, G. J. Christopher Paul, Lt. \V. Belowe and Fit. Lt. A. G. Wilde have become members of the Portsmouth Aero Club. Flying times lor the week ending February 29 amounted to 25 hr. 50 min. CAMBRIDGE Marshall's Flying School and the Cambridge Aero Club flew fifty- two hours last week. Two members took their " A " licences and another pair went solo. It is hoped that four other licences will be taken by next week. LIVERPOOL Severe wintry conditions were experienced throughout February, but the total flying time—120 hr. 40 min.—shows a considerable increase over the corresponding figure for last year. The flying time lor the last week in January was 38 hr. 10 min. READING The film dance last Saturday night produced some outstandingly good costumes, the first prize being taken by Mrs. Crommelin. The Reserve school has been flying hard all the week and two new Hawk Trainers have been added to the fleet. A Merlin, -destined fur Australia, has emerged from the works. NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE The new clubhouse at Meir Aerodrome will be officially opened on Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. by the President of the Club, Mr. C. R. Anson, who will be supported by Lord Sempill and the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent. Members of other clubs are invited to be present and lunch and tea will be provided free for those arriving bv air. There will be various demonstrations during the day. CASTLE BROMWICH [•Tom Friday of this week the Club will remain open for flying during the whole week. Previously, Friday has been a day of rest for the staff. Eleven hours fifty minutes dual and 5 hr. 15 min. solo were recorded during the week ending February 27. LEEMING Messrs. B. Harman and J. B. Gothorp went solo during the week ending February 29 and Mr. Kendrew of Middlesbrough made valiant efforts to fly his Pou.. Yorkshire Aviation Services hope to start building at the York municipal aerodrome within a week or two. Flying time for February totalled 64 hr. 40 min. HANWORTH Mr. S. Vickers is the first Hanworth member of the Air League to pass his " A " licence tests. Th.se tests have also been passed by Mr. M. S. Barradell. Mr. S. Topatian has finished his instructor's 1 OUrse and expects to take bhnd-flying instruction. Messrs. G. Toth, P. A. \fair, and |i. A. Bingen have become members. Last week's living times totalled 4S hr. 35 min. LANCASHIRE The chief instructor, Mr. M. F. Ogilvie Forbes, has completed an instructor's blind-flying couise at Brooklands. Mr. Colin Wilson carried on nobly in his stead. Thirty-five hours were flown during the past fortnight. New members include Messrs. H. Horner, A. L. Ward, P. S. Marples, W. H. Walch and R. E. Tongue. HAMPSHIRE lo celebrate the tenth anniversary oi the Hampshire Aeroplane Club a dance will be held in the clubhouse next Saturday. During the evening the chief instructor, Mr. K. C. Winton, will give a demonstration night flight. February's flying total was 127 hours. Miss Molly Moldon and Mr. G R. Thomas have become members; the latter and Mr. K. Lancester have gone solo; and Messrs. H. F. Montgomery and G. R. Thomas have qualified for their " A " licences. CINQUE PORTS One of the most successful landing competitions which the Cinque Ports Flying Club has yet held took place on Sunday, March 1. Sqd. Ldr. Down, commanding No. 23 Squadron, Hawkinge, accompanied by Mrs Down, commence 1 judging at noon, and carried on until sunset. The winner wa^ Dr. X. Grellier, and he received a small silver replica of the Ashwell-Cookc Cup. A rapid charter flight was carried out on Thursday Mr. Dun- canson, who is on a course at the Small Arms School in Hythe, wished to ride at Newbury in the afternoon. Telephone communica tion with Thatcham, a village some two miles from Newbury race course, secured the necessary road transport, and Mr. Duncanson was on the course in less than an hour and a half after leaving Lympne.
