268 FLIGHT. MARCH 5, 1936. the United States. It is built to a scale of x in. to i ft., and therefore has a wing span of 22 in. The wings, of balsa, are built up in a manner similar to those of the prototype. They are covered with Jap tissue, and mounted at the best angle of incidence, as found by experiment. The fuselage is con structed of 1/40 in. balsa veneer. The undercarriage is shock- absorbing, and the rudder is adjustable. The airscrew is un geared, and is powered by six strands of J in. flat rubber. The model is fast, has an excellent climb (in contrast to the prototype), and a satisfactory glide. The best duration to date is 20 seconds. Mr. Hamilton made his drawings from photographs and a description of the Abbott-Baynes Pou, and refers in appreciative terms to the help and interest he has derived from Flight. In England, Mr. W. Harvey has built a petrol-engined Pou model differing only in minor details from M. Mignet's machine. The wing span is about 4 ft., the scale being ^ full size. The weight is 3| lb. Inclement weather has prevented more than one or two short tests for the purpose of checking trim. Mr. J. YV. Bishop has disposed of his entire fleet of models, including his very successful 30 c.c. petrol-engined biplane Endeavour, and on the proceeds is constructing a full-scale Pou I Practical Information THE 1935-36 edition of Mr. Frank Zaic's Model Aeronautics Year Book, a copy of which I have recently received, deals comprehensively with its subject from the American angle of vision. Various writers contribute to its 74 pages. Beginning with a most useful chapter on low-speed aerodynamics, the book goes on to deal with aerofoils, airscrews, determination of fin area, adjustment of models, rubber, the grading of balsa wood, the design, building and towing of gliders, the use of microfilm for wings and airscrews, etc. There are also general arrangement drawings and details of various successful indoor and outdoor models, including the holder of the world's petrol- engined model duration record of 1 hr. 4 min. 40 sec. Model stores can obtain supplies for retail (at 2s. 6d.) from Mr. C. S. Rushbrooke, " Innsbrook," 14, Ennerdale Drive, Ashton-on-Mcrsey, Sale, Cheshire. THE INDUSTRY Putting Them Together Again THE Airwork service department has been entrusted by Imperial Airways with the manufacture of fuselage and wing replacement wood parts for the Armstrong-Whitworth A talanfa-class monoplane and the assembly of metal wing parts for the Handley Page 42. The size of the latter prompted somebody to ask whether it was an aeroplane being built or a new hangar. From the Right Angle ARTICULATED-ARM lighting fittings for factories and offices form the subject of a catalogue issued by John Dugdill and Co., Ltd., Hazel Grove, near Stockport. Lifting Tackle PULLEY Blocks and Other Lifting Gear" is the title of a brochure that should be of interest to works engineers. It is issued by Herbert Morris, Ltd., of Loughborough, Leicestershire. Springs, Assorted AN extremely comprehensive catalogue of springs of almost every conceivable kind, and also of detail metal fittings, has been issued for the trade by Clarkes (Redditch), Ltd., Sinew Works, Redditch. The King Examines Aero Fabric A DOUBTLESS unexpected item of aeronautical interest attracted the attention of the King when he visited the textiles section of the British Industries Fair at the White City, London. It was at the stand of Bessbrook Spinning Co., Ltd., who featured samples of the fabric used in the Miles Falcon in which Fit. Lt. Rose broke the Cape Town record. His Majesty enquired into the process of manufacture and doping, and various points were explained to him by the chairman of the company, Mr. H. Stephens Richardson. Meeting the Demand THE appointment of Mr. H. Milnes, late assistant works manager of the Blackburn Aeroplane and Motor Co., Ltd., to the position of works manager of Masson Seeley and Co., Ltd., signifies the culmination of an important re-organisation on the part of the latter firm. Considerable extensions have been made to their engineering works at Somers Place, Upper Tulse Hill, London, S.W.2, and they are now well able to cope with the rapid increase in demand for the production of 'machined details in light alloys and stainless steels, together with general precision and tool work for the aircraft industry. For the past two years the firm has been engaged in production of this kind for several of the leading aircraft and engine manufacturers. The sales organisation is under the management of Major F. C. Buck, A.F.R.Ae.S., late of the R.A.F. and R.A.E. The offices of the company are at Masseeley Building, Kowick Place, Westminster, London, S.W.r. YR-NIC are the appropriate registration letters of an S.T.25 Monospar specially built for the personal use of Prince Nicholas of Roumania. The Prince's pilot, Capt. Nicolai Opris (centre) is see bidding farewell to Mr. L. R. E. H. Castlemaine, of General Aircraft, Ltd., before flying the machine home ; the lady is Capt. Opris' wife.
