'444 FLIGHT. APRIL 23, 1935, Private Flying FROM the CLUBS Events and Activity at the Clubs and Schools TOLLERTON G ALES and hailstorms during the Easter week-end occasioned some disappointment: 23 hr. were logged from Friday to Mon day. For the week ending April 16, flying time was 31 hr. 50 min. Address: The Nottingham Flying Club, Tollerton Aerodrome, Nottingham. PORTSMOUTH Miss P. Chapman and Mr. I. E. Yeates became members during the week ending April 17, when the flying time was 21 hr. 15 min. Address: Portsmouth Aero Club, Ltd., The City Airport, Ports mouth. C.A.S.C. Members flew 4 hr. 30 min. dual and 5 hr. 35 min. solo last Sun day. Mr. S. C. Brown went solo and six members flew over to Hatfield for tea. Address: Civil Aviation Service Corps, Fen Ditton Aerodrome, Cambridge. . LIVERPOOL A " nor'-easter " over the Easter holidays had a serious effect on flying. For the week ending Thursday, April 15, the returns total 30 hr. J 5 min. Address: The Liverpool and District Aero Club, Hooton Park Aerodrome, Sheffield. MIDLAND First solo flights were made during the past fortnight by Messrs. P. Danielsen and J. Jack-on. Mr. 1. Pullin passed his " A " licence tests. The flying times for the fortnight were 26 hr. 25 min. dual and 24 hr. solo. New members include Messrs. R. G. Hirst and G. R. Edge. Address: Midland Aero Club, Ltd., Castle Bromwich Aerodrome, Birmingham. WITNEY AND OXFORD High winds held up solo flying during the week ending April 18: the flying times total 21 hr. Witney Aerodrome has been added to the list of recommended schools for W/T and R/T courses by the Signals Department (Civil Aviation) London (Croydon) Airport. Address: Witney and Oxford Aero Club, Witney Aerodrome, Min ster Lovell, Oxjord. BORDER Until the Easter holidays the Club had good weather and Mr. Porter went solo. Five other " solo " members put in time prac tising for their " A " licences. Snow and hail on Friday curtailed flying. Mr. Todd became a member last week and Mr. Muirhead was made a visiting member. The Carlisle-Isle of Man service of British Airways was resumed on Monday, April 20. Address: The Border Flying Club, Ltd., Carlisle Aerodrome, Kingstown, Carlisle. SOUTH COAST Although the wind has been high for instructional work, flying has been quite up to the average. A large party from Shoreham went to the Brooklands Group dinner at the Park Lane Hotel on Saturday. The Monospar was demonstrated on Sunday. Mr. R. Thompson went solo and passed his tests for his " A " licence during the week. New members include Messrs. Hales, Cook, Campbell- Bruce and Carr. Address: South Coast Flying Club, The Airport, Shoreham, Sussex. BRISTOL For the week ending April n flying time was 39 hr. and during the following week 28 hr. Messrs. J. L. N. Pollock, R. Burt and M. Edkins became members and Mr. D. E. J. Aslin transferred to Pilot membership. The B.A. Swallow G-AEAU is again in com mission. A Monospar will be demonstrated on April 25. LONDON The flying done by members while away during the Easter holi days and during the period since the Club reopened was 49 hr. 25 min. New members are: Lt.-Col. C. V. Bennett, Col. M. Maxwell, C. Rowland Hodgson, L. C. Cutbill, C. R. Beverley, C. V. Smith, T. Blanks, J. F. Marsh. On Sunday there were two strange arrivals at Hatfield in the form of sailplanes vrrarrr -Dunstable. Both pilots were out it appears after their " silver C" licence which involves a 30-mile cross-country flight, but were unable to get farther than Hatfield. The machines were dismantled and in due course wheeled away in covered wagons. Address: The London Aeroplane Club, Hatfield, Herts. REDHILL Flying time for the week ending April 17 was 55 hr. 25 min. Jjr J. Bull went solo, Mr. A. Auping made his "B" licence nitjh^- flying test, and Mr. M. A. Blount completed his " B " licence tests Address: Redhill Flying Club. Ltd., Redhill Aerodrome, Surrey, HANWORTH In spite of the very bumpy weather during last week the fivjnff time logged at Hanworth was 49 hr. 20 min. Mr. Whitney Straight hired the Club's -Monospar on Friday, flying to Plymouth and "re turning on Saturday. Mr. McLelland received cross-country in- struction to Shoreham, Tangmere and return. Mr. C. Burge" one of the first of Hanworth's members, has returned, bringing with hini a Redwing. Some very amusing flying was carried out during the week by the Club for a film featuring Claude Hulbert in " Inter rupted Honeymoon." BROOKLANDS The main point of interest at Brooklands last week was the washing-out of the landing fees, which had been somewhat unpopular with visiting pilots. New members are Mr. Cain, Mr. J. Mercer and Miss Young. Mr. R. Callingham went solo after only four hours' instruction and completed the tests for his " A " licence within the fortnight. An International Air Rally will take place at Shoreham Airport on Tune 13 and 14, which is the official opening date of the Airport. There will be an arrival competition for which the first prize will be ^50, and also a race over a closed circuit of about fourteen miles, for which the prizes will be: First prize a Cup and ^50; second prize, ^25; and third prize, £10. CINQUE PORTS The improvement in the weather has had an immediate and marked effect on the flying hours at Lympne. Although for two whole days the high wind made instruction impossible, over forty- eight hours was flown during the week by Club aircraft, including two trips by Mr. Cliff to Berck with Club members in the Leopard. Miss Elser and Mr. C. Hilton-Simpson have joined and both have started instruction. Mr. D. R. McCartney did a successful night flight from Croydon in G-ABOG, which has recently had its C. of A., and is now to be kept almost exclusively for night flying. All blind-flying training will in future be done on the Tiger Moth. Fourteen people, including members and staff, represented the Cinque Ports Flying Club at the Four-Club's dinner and dance.
