MAY 7, 1936. FLIGHT. 405 MODELS Petrol and Clockzvork : " Northern Heights " Gala Day : Club News By M. R. KNIGHT CONTACT BREAKER The principal features of Mr. R. J. Trevi- thick's beauti ful 1 y c o n- scructed petrol monopl ane, described below. CIDCKWORK TO RETARD IGNITION AFTER TAKE-OFF Petrol Ingenuity TLLL STRATED above is the petrol-engined high-wing mono- *- [lane recently produced by Mr. R. J. Trevithick, chairman or the Model Aircraft Club. It is a machine which combines an attractively simple outline with effectiveness, ingenious constructional. features and perfect workmanship. The cantilever straight-chord wing is 6ft. Gin. in span and is in three parts which bolt together. The section is Clark i is. The leading edge is a length of -pg in. x -fV in. spruce, placed on edge and subsequently rounded off; the trailing edge ls of I in x | in. spruce, brought to a fine edge. In the outer 'tctioin of the wing the front and rear main spars have spruce flanges and a balsa web, but in the centre section the flanges •-<-'> of birch, and the web of satin walnut. Diagonal bracing !. a ul- X rW in. birch connects front and rear spars. The dihedral angle is built into the centre section. The ribs are c "t from I in. balsa sheet, and holed for lightness Bamboo i-used for the wing-tips. The wing is attached to the fuselage w 'tn rubber bands, the attachment hooks on the wing being anged to swivel, thus obviating the tendency of wing-tip -o\ys to crush the longerons. Another simple device guards samst displacement of the wing through vibration. tailplane is built similarly to the wing, but the section nearly symmetrical. Trimming tabs of aluminium >roved highly effective. The fin is double-surfaced. i tic undercarriage shock-absorber legs are of 4 in. Dural Tl ha erv v- containing oil and operating on the true oleo principle, "heels are rubber balls, bolted between spun aluminium XI The fusel re is a sprung tail wheel. lage is a rectangular structure, comprising four [jul?fIons of i\ in. x f\ in. spruce, and "Oxford frame" Ply wh k •* front portion is covered with 0.75 mm. three- tate V 'n tUrn is covered witri aluminium sheet to facili- Part oTtKlng' The battery box is mounted in the forward Purpo f fusela8e and on Tails, so that it can slide for the lion nCrt correcting longitudinal trim. A celluloid inspec- eaci, '^enables the battery position to be checked after tiding. Another window is so placed as to permit inspection of the coil and condenser. Wing, fuselage, and tail are covered with Jap silk, clear doped. The engine is a rebuilt American Brown Junior 10 c.c. two- stroke, turning an airscrew of 14 in. diameter and 10 in. pitch at 4,700 r.p.m. It is mounted offset 7! degrees to counteract torque reaction, and there is a sheet of cork between it ami the fuselage. The thrust, as indicated by spring balance, is 2 lb. 11J oz. ! There is a clockwork control of the engine advance and retard gear, and clockwork automatic lime switch. Control to within three seconds has been obtained. An ingenious device, similar in principle to the D.H. strut- type A.S.I., is now being fitted, whereby, should the operator omit to release the time switch, it will automatical^' be brought into action by means of a vane when a certain air speed is reached. The total weight of the model is 3 lb. 91 oz. So far, the duration of flights has been kept down to one minute, but tankage for 3^ minutes is provided. "Northern Heights" Gala Day MR. C. R. FAIREV has again kindly given permission for the highly popular Gala Day annually sponsored by the .Northern Heights Model Flying Club and held at the Great West Aerodrome. The date is Sunday, June 21. Five con tests are scheduled. There is a Concours d'Elegance, with separate sections for (a) power-driven models, (b) non-flying scale models, to any scale, (c) gliders and rubber-driven models, and (d) Juniors, any type of model. The Duration Contest is in two sections, lightweights (total weight cf over 2 oz., but under 5), and heavyweights (5 oz. and over). The average of three hand- launched flights will be taken. In the Inter-Club Team Con test each team will comprise one lightweight and one heavy weight, the loading of which respectively must be 4 oz./sq. ft. and under and 5 oz./sq. ft and over. Entries from clubs, enclosing fee of 10s., must be received by June 18. The Flight Cup will be held for one year, and a replica awarded to the winner of a contest for flying scale models, built to any scale. The average of three hand launched flights will be
