NEW AUXILIARY SQUADRONS Recruiting will begin immediately after Whitsun for the three new squadrons of the Auxiliary Air Force formed under the expan sion scheme. These are No. 609 (West Riding) Squadron, Yeadon aerodrome, with headquarters at Leeds; No. 610 (County of Cheshire) Squadron, Hooton Park; and No. 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron, Speke, with headquarters at Liverpool. All are bomber squadrons, and come within the command of No. 1 Air Defence Group, London. On account of its reorganisation as an Auxiliary Air Force unit, No. 500 (County of Kent) Bomber Squadron, Manston, is not pro ceeding to Hucknall this month for its annual camp. The date ami place of the camp will be notified later. R.A.F. SUB-DEPOT, ORPINGTON The R.A.F. Sub-Depot, Orpington, will close on May 31, 1936. GORDON SHEPHARD MEMORIAL PRIZE The following will be the subject of the Gordon Shephard Memorial Prize Kssay for 1936-1937: — " The increasing range of aircraft may materially affect the Royal Navy's ability to carry.-out its primary role, that of control of sea communications. " Discuss this and illustrate the methods by which types of shore-based aircraft can be employed to assist the Navy in main taining our sea communications while interrupting those of an enemy. " A reasonable latitude may be allowed in the performance of aircraft, but types should be restricted to those at present in use in the Royal Air Force, i.e., flying boats, general recon naissance, torpedo bomber and bomber aircraft." Essays, in triplicate, should be forwarded to the Secretary, Air Ministry, in envelopes -marked " Gordon Shephard Memorial Essay, 1036-1937," so as to arrive oil or before February 1, 1937.
