JUNE 18, 1936. ADVERTISEMENTS. FLIGHT, I The role of Aluminium in Aircraft ALUMINIUM ALLOY HULLS FOR FLYING BOATS . . Twenty-nine iji ton "Empire" Flying Boats are being built for Imperial Airways by Short Bros. (Rochester and Bedford) Ltd. In the construction of these gigantic air liners aluminium alloys are being used exclusively for all structural hull parts, for frames, formers and stringers, and also for the stressed skin. The photograph above shows an interior view of one of these hulls—a splendid example of the exploitation of the weight-saving advantages of aluminium and its alloys in aeronautical engineering. These metals are also used in these great flying boats in wing construction, cowlings, fuel and oil tanks, and in many other parts requiring strength combined with lightness.
