FLIGHT. JANUARY 7, 1937. Two women record holders whose names appear in the table below. (Above): Mile. Maryse Hilz. (Right): Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam seen with the Lockheed Electra "Flying Labora tory '' belonging to Purdue University. Vultee, with supercharged 1,000 h.p. Wright Cyclone engine, Richman and Merrill for the first time took advan tage of the added power and range made possible by the use of 100-octane fuel. It is interesting to note that Richman holds the amphibian altitude record at 18,641 ft. in a Sikorsky aircraft with Pratt and Whitney engine. Bossoutrot and Rossi hold for France the international long distance record over a closed circuit. On a Bleriot no monoplane they flew 6,587.4 miles during March 23, Rossi and Codos hold the long distance "line flight" record on a Bleriot- Zappata, having flown 5,657 miles. Previously the record was held at 5,308 miles, by Sqn.-Ldr. Gayford and Flt.- Nicholetts in a Fairey monoplane. Among the continent-to- continent and capital-to- capital flights, record time from England to Australia has been lowered on no fewer than twelve occasions, and thirty-six British flights have been completed. The aircraft flown vary from an Avro Avian with 80 h.p. Cirrus engine and a Comper Swift (80 h.p. Pobjoy R) to a 200 h.p. Gipsy Six Percival Gull and D.H. Comet (two Gipsy Six R), the last-named having a total of 448 h.p. The D.II. Comet flown by C. W. A. Scott and the late T. Any of these records may be set up in one of the sections for aeroplanes with a pay-load of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 kg. (There is also a record for the greatest pay-load carried to an altitude of 2,000 metres.) Class C correctly indicates aeroplanes weighing more than 560 kg- empty; Class C, first category, is for multi-seaters weighing empty between 280 and 560 kg.; Class C, second category, is for single-seaters between 200 and 450 kg.; Class C, third category, is for multi-seaters less than 280 kg.; and Class C, fourth category, for single-seaters less than 200 kg.
