ADVERTISEMENTS. JANUARY 14, 1937. "BRISTOL" FEATURES. CYLINDER. Bristol" cylinders are the outcome of hundreds of thousands of hours of dynamometer research work and millions of miles of flight testing. The hardened cylinder bores enable "Bristol" engines to run for thousands of hours without necessitating regrinding or developing excessive oil consumption. " Bristol" cylinders can be fitted with new valve seats when required, and already thousands have been so renovated by means of the special facilities which exist at the "Bristol" works for this service. The practice of machining the cylinder head from a light alloy forging was originated by the Bristol Company ten years ago and has been used on all subsequent engines. This method provides a much more homo geneous and therefore stronger and more reliable structure than can be obtained by any other means. The cooling fins of five to the inch pitch are accurately machined to a proportion which gives maximum efficiency. A total radiating area of 166.5 square feet is provided, an increase in cylinder head area of 40% compared with previous series. A thermocouple location is in corporated in the cylinder head, and standard cylinder temperature measur ing equipment is available for both field and flight use. air cooled aero engines.
