ADVERTISEMENTS. MARCH U, T937- FEATURES OF 1937 "BRISTOL" MERCURY AND PEGASUS ENGINES CAM GEAR The cam sleeve, with inlet and exhaust cam tracks each having four cams, is driven from the crankshaft through a layshaft at one-eighth engine speed. The gears are hardened and ground; and the layshaft bearings are mounted, one in the aluminium alloy casing and the other in a special high- expansion steel support to overcome the effects of differential expansion. The cam sleeve is short and stiff, and both cam tracks are placed centrally over the pressure-lubricated bearing. The cam lobes are designed with low accelerations, made possible by the automatic compensation for increase of valve clearances which is incorporated in the valve-operating mechanism. The cam tracks are ground on a special fixture and then checked in a sensitive testing machine, to ensure accuracy within fine limits. The crankshaft gear which drives the layshaft is coupled by means of serrations, which provide easy and accurate means of valve timing and adjustment.
