THE DUKE OF KENT His Majesty The King has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of His Royal Highness George Edward Alexander Edmund Duke of Kent, K.G., K.T., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., to be a Group Captain in the Royal Air Force. NEW DIRECTOR OF SIGNALS The Air Ministry announces the appointment of Air Comdre. Charles William Nutting, O.B.E., D.S.C., to be Director of Signals, Air Ministry, on April 1, 1937, vice Air Comdre. James Bevan Boiven, C.B.E. R.A.F. VOLUNTEER RESERVE—OVER 800 PILOTS REQUIRED The Air Ministry announces: — Arrangements have been completed for the entry of personnel for training as pilots at twelve aerodrome centres in the recently created Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and for training to begin early in April. The total number of entrants required during the next twelve months is not less than 800. Applications are invited immediately from candidates resident in or near the follow ing places for training at the aerodromes shown: — Place. Aerodrome Filton Ansty Prestwick Brough Desford Hanworth, Hatfield and White Waltham Sywell Perth Hamble Yates bury Candidates must be between their 18th and 25th birthdays, be physically fit and have had an education up to the standard of the School Certificate, or the Leaving Certificate in Scotland. Pre vious flying experience is not necessary. Applications should be sent to the Secretary, Air Ministry (S.7.C), Kingsway, London, W.C.2, but it is contemplated that in the majority of cases local selection boards will be practicable. Selected candidates will be enlisted as airman pilots with the rank of Sergeant; later they will have opportunities of promotion to commissioned rank on merit. The initial period of service will Bristol Coventry Glasgow Hull Leicester London Northampton Perth Southampton Swindon be five years and pilots will have the opportunity of extending their service at the end of that period. Training will be available at week-ends and at other times, including evenings, where this is practicable. Flying training will be given at the aerodromes and ground training at town centres centrally situated in the various places mentioned. Candidates must be* able and willing to attend for training at week-ends and in the evenings. They will also be required to attend for 15 days' continuous training annually at times which, as far as possible, will be arranged to suit the con venience of individual pilots. In this connection the Air Ministry would emphasise that the success of this scheme will depend in a great measure on the good will and co-operation of employers who can do much to facilitate the attendance of volunteers for training. Provided they carry out the training required of them, pilots will receive a retaining fee of £25 a year. Pay and allowances will be given for periods of continuous training and an allowance to cover out-of-pocket expenses at other times. Travelling expenses will be refunded. The Air Ministry contemplates the opening of aerodromes and town centres in a number of other districts. Announcements will be made from time to time as soon as it is possible to consider applications from these additional areas. No. 11 FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL The undermentioned officers have been awarded special assess ments at No. n Flying Training School, Wittering: — Distinguished Pass A.PyO.s P. H. Alington and J. Ellis. NO. 2 FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL The undermentioned officer and airmen have been awarded special assessments on completion of a course of flying training at No. 2 Flying Training School, Digby: — Special Distinction A./P/O. J. F. Grey. Distinguished Pass A./Sgts. Garrod, A. E., Jones, W. T., and Moores, L. G. FLYING ACCIDENT The Air Ministry regrets to announce that F/O. Kenneth North- cote Lees lost his life and A/C.i Frederick Atkinson was slightly injured as the result of an accident which occurred at Tanai, near Wana, India, on March 11, to an aircraft of No. 5 (Army Co-opera tion) Squadron, Chaklala, Rawalpindi, Punjab. F/O. Lees was the pilot of the aircraft and A/C.r Atkinson the passenger.
