APRIL I, 1937- FLIGHT. 325 Private Flying FROM the CLUBS and SCHOOLS NOTTINGHAM L AST week the flying time at Tollerton amounted to 19 hr. 10 min. Mr. W. Leeming-Jones started training for his " A." Miss J. Hayward. Lt. T. Bett, and Mr. F. Kenning have joined the Club as associate members. MIDLAND The Midland Aero Club flew 17 hr. 5 min. dual and 12 hr. 45 min. solo during the week ended March 25. Cross-country flights were made to Hatfield, Reading, Southampton, Tollerton and Pershore. A Hornet Moth (G-AEVU) has now been added to the fleet of privately owned machines. LBEMING Time for the week ended March 27 totalled 49 hr. 30 min. Mr. T. C. Pick, one of the Club's pilots, has returned from his flight to Cairo. Mr. King has gone solo, while Mr. J. Rowntree has completed his tests for the " A " licence. Mr. Headlam has ordered a Miles Whitney Straight. HYDERABAD Members of the Hyderabad State Aero Club flew 156 hr. 25 min. during the months of January and February. Nawab Asadullab Khun, Messrs. E: K. Jassa valla, C. J. Reddy and Nawab S. K. Hussain haw passed their " A " licence tests, while Nawab K. Azmathullah Khan and Mr. Mirza Bahadur Ali Baing have gone solo. All four sons of Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad Bahadur are very enthusiastically taking up flying. NORFOLK AND NORWICH During the past week forty hours were recorded at Norwich. The majority of this flying took place during the Easter roliJays, which were also .responsible for a number of visitors tjy air. Among them were Mr. John Grierson and Fit. Lt. K. C. Preston in a B.A. Swallow from Woburn. .Fit. Lt. Preston's last visit was on a happier occasion when he anil the Duchsfe of Bedford landed at Mjusehold some two years ago in her Moth. PORTSMOUTH The flying time for the Portsmouth Aero Club for the week ended March 26 was 31 hr. 35 min. New members are Lt. Cdr. H. C. Maclean, R.N., and Messrs. J. G. Younghusband, E. C. W. Beale, W. P. Mc. Eldowny, J. E. Collins, and R. D. Williams. Miss A. Fawsitt has qualified for her " A " licence along with Mr. J. D. G. Bishop, who is now going forward towards his " B " licence. Night- flying instruction was given on March 15 and 22, and it has been arranged to give such instruction on Monday evening each week when weather permits. BENGAL During February members ol the Bengal Flying Club put in 8 hr. 50 min. flying. Return cross-countrv flights were made to Tatanager, Maheshganj and Berhampur. YAPTON Flying times for -March to the 27th were 84 hr. 35 rain., the weather on the whole being fair. New members are Mr. David Archer and Mr. W. T. Keid; both are taking the £15 " A " course. Mr, Lalitmohan Manilal has passed his " A " licence tests. ROYAL AIR FORCE Members of the K.A.F. Flying Club will be sorry to learn that Capt. E. C. Winkley, who has devoted his whole time to the honorary secretaryship oi the Club for nearly three years, has been reluctantly compelled to resign. His successor will be F/O. K. G. Weighill. HERTS AND ESSEX Weather conditions permitted flying on eleven days only during the fortnight ended .March 18, the total time for the period being 69 hr. 56 min. New members are Messrs. B. D. Bolas, J. H. Charsley, E. H. Church and H. C. Ferguson. ABMF and Al'.IU (privately owned aircraft), and ABTZ, the Club's Stinson, are again in service alter their C. of A's. CAMBRIDGE Flying time at Marshall's Flying School for the fortnight ended .March 28 totalled 87 hr. 25 min. Messrs. Wallis, Loch, Smithers and Eldrett have joined the School, and Mr. Gardiner has gone solo. There has been a good deal of joy-riding over the Hooded Fens and cross-country flights were made to Heston and Abridge. Snow storms and squally weather held up flying on three days of last week. BROOKLANDS Flying time for the nine days ending March 29 was 112 hr., during which time Messrs. Ezekiel and Whittet passed their height tests and Mr. Metford made his .first solo. During the week Messrs. Bailey and List flew to Edinburgh and back in a Puss Moth, calling also at Renfrew and Liverpool. On another day they and Mr. Ortoh made a return trip to Le Bourget. Mr: Lovell flew to Le Touquet and back. Fit. Lt. Grey has left for Palestine in a Tifjer Moth; on arrival he is starting a flying school. New members.are Messrs. Botting, Barnett and Santos Casani. Mr. Casani served in the K.F.C. and R.A.F. during the war. CINQUE PORTS New members who joined the Club last week were Messrs. R. C. Cockburn, G. T. Booth, A. Monteith, and C. F. Hughesdon, while Messrs. Walter Stern and Tony Jephson were welcomed back alter an absence of several months. The Easter rush of private owners abroad once more saw the Club very busy administering to the needs of the inner man (and woman); sixteen machines clearing outwards from Lympne on Friday "alone. Flying hours for the week showed a definite improvement, sixty-eight being recorded. Last Tuesday week the Monospar returned from Austria flown by Fit. Lt. Hogan. He had a pleasant trip, except for the weather, which held him up for one day at the German Air Force aerodrome at Hall, near Stuttgart. The officers of the Squadron were very helpful to him, showing him over the town and later lending him maps. ANOTHER FLYING LABORATORY : The first of the new Heston Phoenix monoplanes with Series II Gipsy Six engine and v.p. airscrew has been ordered by Standard Radio and will be used for experimental and demonstra tion work.
