ADVERTISEMENTS. APRIL 8, 1937. FEATURES OF 1937 'BRISTOL'' MERCURY AND PEGASUS ENGINES CRANKSHAFT The massive crankshaft is of the split type, the crankpin being secured to the rear half of the shaft by the gripping action of a stout bolt, which is tightened to a carefully measured elongation. It is carried on one ball bearing and two roller bearings. The front half, including the crankpin, is surface-hardened all over and as a result of the exceptionally hard bearing surface provided by this treatment, together with the high fatigue range afforded by the special material of which it is constructed, it is extremely durable and long wearing. The detachable rear half of the crankshaft allows for the use of a solid master rod and fully-floating big-end bush, both of which features of radial engine design have been pioneered and developed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company for the last eleven years. The floating bush considerably increases the bearing area and reduces the rubbing speed of the big end, thus greatly increasing the reliability and effective life of The separate tailshaft has a degree of uni versal movement which relieves the crankcase rear cover of all crankshaft loads.
