FEATURES OF 1937 "BRISTOL" MERCURY AND PEGASUS ENGINES CRANKCASE Great strength is im parted to the crankcase by the use of aluminium alloy forgings which are far superior, both in load-carrying capacity and in fatigue resist ance, to sand-cast crankcases. After heat treatment, the crank- case forgings acquire three times the effective strength-weight ratio of cast crankcases in general use. The cylinder holding studs, with accurately ground threads, are each secured inside the crankcase by a lock nut. They have a long waisted portion which renders them more elastic than a normal full diameter stud, and thereby obviates breakage.
