FEATURES OF 1937 "BRISTOL'' MERCURY AND PEGASUS ENGINES SUPERCHARGER AND JF+X DRIVE the teeth of distributed and High inertia loads in the impellor drive are avoided by the incorporation in each intermediate driving-gear assembly of a clutch, composed of phosphor bronze wedge-shaped clutch blocks which act progressively under centri fugal force. This system of slipping clutches maintains a practically constant torque in the drive, which, combined with the low tooth loadings, gives smooth-run ning mechanism of exceptional durability. The supercharger is of the high speed centrifugal type running at an impellor speed of from seven to ten limes crankshaft speed, depending upon the degree of supercharge intended. The system is the result of many hundred thousand hours of flight testing and development running (conducted upon special supercharger dynamometers) which permit the mechanism to be subjected to con- iinuous overload running under a wide range of conditions. The power taken from the crankshaft to drive the supercharger impellor is transmitted through a spring drive unit, which effectively damps out engine torque variations, and through three symmetrically disposed intermediate gear pinions.
