Higher Appointments THE Air Ministry announces the appointment ol Air Vice-Mar-shal Hazelton Robson Nicholl, C.B.E., to be Air Officer Com-manding, K.A.F., Middle East, with effect from a date in March, 1938, vice Air Vice-Marshal Cuthbert Trelawder Maclean, C.B.,D.S.O., M.C., who will assume command of No. 2 (Bomber) Group. A.V.-M. H. K. Nicholl, who was born in 1882, entered the R.F.C.as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1915, and his subsequent war service, for which he was awarded the O.B.E. and a French decoration, in-cluded the command of various squadrons. He was granted a permanent commission in the R.A.F. in 1919with the rank of Squadron Leader and, after employment on Air Staff Duties at various H.Q.s and at the Air Ministry, he passeda course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, in 1926. He com- manded a Squadron in Iraq from 1926 to 1929, being awarded theC.B.E. in 1929 for services rendered in connection with the opera- tions in the Southern Desert, Iraq, and subsequently he served suc-cessively as Deputy Director of Training, Deputy Director of Per- sonal Services and Deputy Director of Manning at the Air Ministrybefore proceeding to command the Royal Air Force Base at Calshot in 1952. In March, 1934, he was appointed to command the CentralArea, Air Defence of Great Britain, and since November, 1935, has been on the Special Duty List whilst serving with the Royal Aus-tralian-Air Force. He was promoted to Group Captain in 1929, to Air Commodore in1933, and to his present rank in January, 11137. A.V.-M. C. T. Maclean, who was born in 1886, was commissionedin the Royal Fusiliers Special Reserve as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1914, and in the following year was seconded to the R.F.C., havinggraduated at the C.F.S. In 1916 he was transferred from the Royal Fusiliers Special Reserve to the Royal Scots Fusiliers, and in 1919was granted a permanent commission in the R.A.F. as a Wing Cdr. and resigned his regular Army Commission. During the Great War A.V.-M. Maclean served in France, and inaddition to receiving the D.S.O., the M.C., and a French decoration, was mentioned in despatches on three occasions. In 1920 he wasposted to H.Q., Inland Area for Personal Staff Duties, and in 1922 proceeded to India for Air Staff Duties. Subsequently hecommanded a F.T.S. at home, and units in Iraq and Egypt, and in 1929 he was appointed O.C., British Forces in Aden. In 1031, hewas posted to the Air Ministry as Director of Postings, and since 1934 has been Air Officer Commanding, R.A.F., Middle East. He was promoted to Group Captain in 1925, to Air Commodorein 1931, and to his present rank in January, 1935. He was appointed C.B. in the New Year Honours List, 1933. Singapore Defence Exercises MORE than a hundred aiicraft took part in the combined exer-cises at Singapore last week. Included in the twenty-sevenwarships participating was the carrier Eagle. The R.A.F, units in the defending force were under the immediatecommand of Air Vice-Marshal A. W. Tedder, A.O.C. Far East Com- mand, and comprised Nos. 36 and 100 (T.B.) Squadrons, Nos. 203,205 and 230 (G.R.) Squadrons, and Nos. 84, 39 and 60 (Bomber) Squadrons, together with their attendant bomber transport aircraftand with the Straits Settlement Volunteer Air Force. • •"-"••••'•• Move of Units to Dhibban NOS. 1 and 2 Companies, Iraq Levies, closed at Hinaidi andreopened at Dhibban on January 2 and December 23 respec- tively.
