South African Airways have ordered two more Junkers of the Grosser Des- sauer type. • Aircraft, by dropping supplies and by guiding the ice-breakers, played a pro- minent part in the rescue last week-end of the Russian scientists marooned on an ice-floe in the Greenland Sea. Five Boeing YB17 four - engined bombers last Friday flew the 2,500 miles between Lima and Buenos Aires in 12 J hours. They had already flown 2,700 miles from Miami to Lima in less than 16 hours. Lord Dufferin and Ava, Under Secre- tary of State for the Colonies, is now making a 3,000-mile air tour of British territories in Aden, Somaliland and the Sudan, flying in Service machines, in- cluding a Vickers Valentia troop-carrier and a Vickers Vincent. Lockhceds have lately been develop-ing a new engine installation known as " Uiiitwin Power." This entails thecoupling together oi two Menasco engines mounted side by side and driving oneairscrew. Either engine may be operated independently of the other. Northern and Scottish Airways havebeen performing emergency ambulance duties in the Hebrides again. On thesame day, their machines brought to Glasgow for hospital treatment a girlfrom North Uist with appendicitis and a five-year-old boy from Barra with abroken arm. HELICOPTER CONTROLLABILITY : Fraulein Hanna Reitsch making her remarkable indoor flight (reported last week) with the Focke-Wulf helicopter inthe Deutschlandhalle, Berlin. Horizontal motion is obtained from the rotors, and not from the airscrew, which acts mainly as a cooling fan. One of the floats of the Mercurywas slightly damaged last week when it came in contact with an oil tank setadrift by an exceptionally high tide. For the fiscal year 1938-39 the Canadian Government has voted $10,753,617 (£2,150,700) for 75 new air- craft, stores, five air bases on the Pacific coast and an additional 480 officers and men for the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Caproni concern is said to bebuilding a machine to recapture for Italy the world's altitude record. An originaltype of Isotta. Fraschini engine is to be fitted. The Brazilian Air Force has acquiredthe three Savoia-Marchetti bombers which recently flew the South Atlantic.The Duce has made Brazil a present of the machine piloted by his son. PASSED OFF TEST. The Alvis Pelidesengine on test at its makers' works atCoventry. As re- corded in Flight lastweek, this engine, passed its type testsa short time a^o and has received civil-type approval in the "normal" category,sub-divisions (a) to (e), "special " cate-gory (f) to (g) and " aerobatic " cate-gory (a) to (g).
