MAY 19, 1938. . • FLIGHT. ADVT. RELIABILITY ELEVEN letters—and how little they mean to most of us. " Reliability" : a long word and a strong word, but one so loosely bandied about in print that its significance is lost at first glance—and only realised after conscious effort. Dictionaries disagree, yet help to substantiate the thought behind the word. " Of sound and consistent quality," says the Oxford Dictionary; Websters prefers, " Suitability or fitness to be relied on ; trustworthiness." These two definitions determine the importance that " engine reliability " must connote in aircraft—giving the full (we had almost said ' sacred') meaning of the word, its life-and-death significance to "the airman. Only as the outcome of progressive large * scale manufacture and world^wide operating experience can really "sound and consistent quality" be claimed for an aeroengine. Nothing but proven security over a long period with unimpeachable performance can win the hallmark of "trustworthiness." This is what "reliability" means in regard to Gipsy Engines. They are the product of years of steady development. They can be trusted. AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DE HAVIiiAND AIRCRAFT CO.. LTD.. HATFIELD, HERTFORDSHIRE
