LF m 'IFE can be very awkward. A few days ago we were demonstrating a Desoutter electric drill and in our enthusiasm we said— perhaps a little boastfully—" You can't stall it, you see! " "You can't " replied the customer—" Let me have a go ". Well, to finish this painful part of the story quickly, he promptly stalled it. We congratulated him on his remarkable forearm development. In a way we had the best of it, however, because—see how quickly our brains work—we promptly changed our ground and pointed out that if by chance some clumsy brute did stall a Desoutter Tool, no harm was done. The Tool could remain stalled with current on for quite a while without damage to the armature. And, as we said, if you leave an electric tool stalled for any length of time, your proper place is a lunatic asylum. We said this, you understand, to get our own back on him for stalling the drill. It certainly isn't easy to do. The armatures in these Desoutter Tools are hand-wound. That's why they can stand stalling without the insulation going west. It costs more, of course, than machine winding but it's worth it, isn't it ? Quite apart from human carelessness, there is the fact that sooner or later a drill is going to strike a hard spot in a casting. Desoutter Bros. Ltd.
