COMMISSIONS in the Royal Naval Volunteer Eeserve. APPOINTMENTS Will Shortly be Made to a Number of Commissions in the Air Branch of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for Observer Duties. APPLICANTS Must Have Attained the Age of 17 Years and Must Not Have Attained the age of 23 on the 1st October, 1939, and must have a standard of education equivalent to that of School Certificate; a high standard of physi cal fitness is required; gentlemen appointed will he required to undergo an initial period of full- time training of 10 months with the option of undergoing a further period of two months' full time training to gain experience at sea; thereafter annual training will be required until 10 years' service has been completed; officers who complete the 10 months' training and pass the necessary tests will receive gratui ties of £80. Q ment UALIFICATIONS:— CANDIDATES Must Have Had Sufficient Techni. cal Education to Enable Them to Read Working Drawings and Specifications, to use fine measuring instruments and to understand and appreciate the principles of materials testing; they must have had practical experience in an engineering works, preference being given to those who have served an apprenticeship or pupilage with an engineering firm. THEY Must be Prepared to Serve in Any Part of the United Kingdom and to Go Into the Air if Required in Connection with their Duties. SUCCESSFUL Candidates Will be Required to Undergo a Period of Training in Aeronauti cal Engineering Inspection Not Exceeding 3 Months. DURING Training Candidates Will be Re garded as on Probation and Paid at the Rate of £184 a year; on satisfactory comple tion of the training course, they will be appointed as examiner and paid at £246 a year rising by increments of £12 if service is satis factory to £337 except that the starting salary for entrants below the age of 24 years will be reduced by £12 for each year below that age. QUBSISTANCE Allowance at the Rate of O £1/5 Weekly is Payabel Whilst Under Training to Married Men (and others with certain dependents) who normally reside out side the training centre. METAL Aircraft Rigger Instructors Must be Capable of Lecturing and of Demonstrat ing the working of light metal tubes and plates as used in airframe construction; knowledge of the rigging of airframes is required; carpenter rigger instructors must be capable of lecturing and demonstrating the repair of wooden air frames; knowledge of the rigging of airframes is necessary.
