It was, in fact, our first effort at making an artificial leg that brought us into the small tool business. We had designed a light duralumin limb that seemed streets ahead of the current clumsy and painful affairs. But we met a snag when it came to drilling rivet holes in it. The man had to hold the shaped metal in one hand and do his drilling with the other. Unfor tunately there was no one-handed drill in existence. Well, these legs were wanted badly, so we did the only thing we could. We started out to design a drill so small, so light and so efficient, it could be operated in comfort with one hand. We did design such a drill and it was one quarter the weight of any such tool previously made. That's how we started in small tool manufacture. We led the world in it and we flourished because a whole lot of people welcomed a one-handed tool. A man on a ladder, using both hands to operate a heavy drill, is not a very happy man.
