He competed at meetings at Wolverhampton, Bournemouth, Blackpool and Lanark flying a Short Wright biplane and a Bleriot monoplane. In the same year as he qualified he was killed at sea when competing for the Baron de Forest prize. Shell's pioneer work in the cause of aviation consisted in discovering sites for aerodromes and service stations and in producing fuel and oil wherewith longer flights and greater speeds could be achieved. The results of that work are apparent today in Shell Aviation Service which enables the holder of a Shell Camet to obtain supplies of oil and fuel on credit at any Shell station throughout the world.
