JUNE 22, 1939. Public Appointments A DMIRALTY. COMMISSIONS in the Air Branch of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. THE Admiralty ' are Prepared to Receive Applications for Commissions in the Air Branch of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve; appointments will be either for observer or pilot duties. APPLICANTS Must Have Attained the Age of 17 Years and Must Not Have Attained the Age of 21 on the 3rd June, 1939; they must have a standard of education equivalent to that of the school certificate And a good elementary knowledge of trigonometry and mechanics; a high standard of physical fitness is required; accepted candidates will he re quired to undergo an initial period of full time training of 1 year, of which the first 6 months will be as seamen in the Royal Naval Special Reserve; thereafter annual training will be re quired until 10 years' service in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve have been completed; officers who complete the year's full-time train ing and pass the necessary tests will receive a gratuity of £50. CIVILIAN Instructors Required; vacancies exist for civilian fitter, metal aircraft rigger, carpenter rigger instructors at an initial rate of pay of £4 a week inclusive, increasing to £4/5 on the satisfactory completion of a pro bationary period of one month, and thereafter by annual increments of 2/6 a week to £4/12/6 a week. mHE Necessary Qualifications are:— FITTER Instructors Must be Capable of Lecturing and of Demonstrating the Theory of the Internal Combustion Engine and of Undertaking Instruction in Dismantling and Erecting Engines, aero engine experience and use of precision tools are essential. M ETAL Aircraft Rigger Instructors, must be capable of lecturing and of demonstrat ing the working of light metal tubes and plates as used in airframe construction; knowledge of the rigging of airframes is required; carpenter rigger instructors must be capable of lecturing and demonstrating the repair of wooden air frames; knowledge of the rigging of airframes is necessary. APPLICATIONS Should be Addressed to the Air Officer Commanding No. 24 (Training Group, Royal Air Force, Halton, Aylesbury, Backs, giving particulars as to previous experi ence, age, etc.; suitable applicants will then be required to attend at the nearest Royal Air Force trade testing centre for the necessary trade test and medical examination. [0017 * IR MINISTRY. A IR Traffic Control Officers. APPLICATIONS are Invited for Appoint ments as Air Traffic Control Officers, Grade III, for employment at civil airports on a salary scale of £350 a year rising by annual increments of £18 to £500 a year. CONSIDERABLE Flying Experience is Essen tial, and candidates should have a know ledge of air navigation and air legislation pre ferably to the standard of the pilot's " B" licence; a knowledge of air line operational organisation will be an asset. C ANDIDATES Should Have Passed Their 25th Birthday, but not have attained their 45th birthday on 1st July, 1939; exceptionally, the department is prepared to consider applications from candidates with special qualifications (e.g., possession of a pilot's " B" licence) who are between the ages of 22 and 25. S ELECTED Candidates Will be Given a Course of Training in Control Officer's Duties for a Period of About Three to Four Months, during which they will receive full pay and subsistence allowances where applicable; upon the satisfac tory completion of training they will be posted to a civil aerodrome in the Cnited Kingdom for duties in a control tower where they will be responsible for rendering control and naviga tional assistance to aircraft. A PROPORTION of the Posts are Established and Pensionable, and successful candidates may be considered for posts on the permanent establishment if and when vacancies occur. G RADE III Officers are Eligible for Promotion as Vacancies Occur to Air Traffic Control Officers, Grade II, on the scale £500 to £600 per annum. A GENERAL Knowledge of the Application of -A. Radio Aids in Aviation. A DMINISTRATIVE Experience. THE Officer Will be Largely Concerned with Approval of New Types of Aircraft Radio Apparatus and His Duties Will be Mainly Ad ministrative, but may involve occasional flying as an observer. S UBJECT to a Period of Satisfactory Proba tion, the selected candidate will he eligible for consideration for a post on the permanent establishment when vacancies arise. QUALIFICATIONS :— CANDIDATES Must Have Had Sufficient Technical Education to Enable Them to Read Working Drawings and Specifications, to use micrometers and other measuring instru ments; an elementary knowledge of the princi ples of materials testing is desirable; they must have had practical experience in an engineering works, preference being given to those who have served an apprenticeship or pupilage with an engineering firm. THEY Must be Prepared to Serve in Any Part of the United Kingdom and to go into the Air if Required in Connection with their Duties. SUCCESSFUL Candidates Will be Required to Undergo a Period of Training in Aeronauti cal Engineering Inspection not Exceeding Three Months. D URING Training Candidates Will be Re garded as on Probation and Paid at the Rate of £184 a Year; on satisfactory completion of the training course, they will be appointed as examiner and paid at £246 a year rising by increments of £12 if service is satisfactory to £337, except that the starting salary for entrants below the age of 24 years will be reduced by £12 for each year below that age. SUBSISTENCE Allowance at the Rate of £1/5 Weekly is Payable Whilst Under Training to Married Men (and others with certain de pendents) who normally reside outside the train ing centre.
