FLIGHT A specially prepared Flight drawing showing details of the latest type of Heinkel He m bomber. The machine shown has Daimler Benz DB 601 direct-injection engines. The photograph below purports to show the pilot of an He 111 giving a rendering on his mouth organ of the Horst Wessel song as he flies along in formation. Details ot the nose gun mounting of the latest type of He 111 may be studied in the view above. The gun is of the standard German pattern and is belt fed from a peculiar magazine which saddles the breech portion. For purposes of description we may consider the He in as being used in two basic models, which we shall call the long-nosed and short-nosed versions. The following struc tural description of the long-nosed machine (the earlier type) will apply in the main to the newer edition, the peculiarities of which will be discussed later. Characteristically, the He in has a low, cantilever mono plane wing of unusual plan form with elliptical outer panels. There are two spars, and the stressed-skin covering has flush riveting. Fuel tanks are installed in the centre section The fuselage, one portion of which is built integral with the centre-section of the wing, is of oval section and of extremely fine aerodynamic form. Corresponding with the main spars are two large bulkheads ; a third bulkhead is placed farther aft, and there are the usual transverse frames Running fore and aft are longerons and stringers of channel section. The tail has cantilever surfaces with trimming tabs in the rudder and elevator. The rearwardly retracting undercarriage folds into the engine nacelles. Each unit has two oleo legs and a low- pressure wheel which is entirely enclosed when the under carriage is raised by hinged panels. In the main the long-nosed He ins have Daimler- Benz DB 600 or DB 601 engines, giving a maximum out put of over 1,000 h.p. each. These drive three-bladed V.D.M. variable-pitch airscrews and have underslung radiators mounted forward of the undercarriage units.
