• 76 Advertisements. FEBRUARY 5, 1940 technical information on the use of. . . ALUMINIUM ON ACTIVE SERVICE • DTD. 390 'NoraP Aldad 23s sheet to DTD specifica- tion 390 was developed and introduced by the Northern Aluminium Company to assist standardisation by replacing 21.38, 5L3 and DTD. 275 Specifications. The heat-treatment is similar to that for the alloys it replaces, namely, heating at 49O°C ± io°C and quenching in cold water or oil. As is the case with all alloys of the same type, care should be exercised in the following respects:— L The table at right is a guide to the times of immersion of various gauges, in a fused salt bath. Time at temperature influences the resultant mechanical properties and parts of a load should be well spaced to ensure their correct treatment. 2. The correct times of immersion will depend on size of load in relation to size of bath and should be finally determined by trial. Excessive times are detrimental. 3. There should be adequate depth of salt below and above the load. 4. Baths should be regularly cleared of sediment to eliminate hot spots. Over- heating causes cracking. Our Advisory Service Department zvt'H provide further technical data demanded by special circumstances.
