AN AVIATION DANGER OVERCOME: THE GRAVJNER SYSTEM OF PREVENTING FIRE WHfiH AN AlfUKAFf CRASHES A new fire extinguishing system, the Graviner, has been adopted as a standard fitting by the R.A.F. Its purpose is to put out fires in the engine compartments if * crash occurs, «nd to enable fires to be extinguished while in flight, or if th« aircraft overturns in making a forced landing. The extinguishing medium used is pure methyl-bromide contained in copper bottles under a high pressure. When this fluid Is discharged, it Immediately evaporates with an intense cooling effect. The engine Is inundated with the chemical, so that hot metal parts become THI GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO. LTD . FIRST AVENUE instantly reduced in heat below the ignition point of petrol and the fire is smothered. The Graviner system is operated by three simple switches; on?, called the Crash Switch, acts with the speed of a gun the moment an aircraft crashes. The Gravity Switch operates when an aircraft inadvertentl/ turns over In landing. The Flame-Operated Switch comes into action when the temperature round it reaches 150'.
