AUGUST 29, 177 Ruhral Transport : A Wellington being prepared for the usual night trip toGermany. Note the new shape of the camouflage painting to defeat the searchlights. P/0. P. C. F. Stevenson. This officer has flowncontinuously with his squadron since May, 1940. He participated in the Dunkirk operations and hassince been engaged throughout the intensive air operations which have occurred whilst protectingsnipping in the Channel and Thames Estuary. He has destroyed three enemy aircraft and assistedin the destruction ol others. On two occasions this officer has been forced to abandon his aircraft byparachute on account of enemy action, but this has merely increased his determination to engage theenemy on every possible occasion. His coolness, courage and spirit are of the highest order. - Act. Fit. Lt. L. M. Gaunce. This flight com-mander has displayed excellent coolness anil leader- ship since the return of the squadron to England. In July his flight took part in resisting an enemy air attack on Dover, when three of our aircraftwere attacked by forty Junkers 87s. At least two of the enemy aircraft were shot down. Fit. Lt.Gaunce has shot down three enemy aircraft since returning to England. F/O. P. Collard (since reported missing). Duringoperations in France, and in particular during a period in May, this officer took part in almostevery patrol undertaken by the squadron and de- stroyed two enemy aircraft. Since his return toEngland. F/O. Collard has continued his excel- lent work and has destroyed a further four enemy-aircraft. P/O. P. H. Hugo. P/O. Hugo has displayedgreat keenness to engage the enemy on every pos- sible occasion. During June and July he destroyedfive enemy aircraft. AWAHDED THE DISTINGUISHED FLTING MEDAL.Sgt. J. H. Lacey. Sgt. Lacey has taken part in numerous patrols against the enemy. He has dis.played great determination and coolness in combat and has destroyed six enemy aircraft. .Sgt. L. S. Millen. Sgt. R. H. Carr. In August.Sgt Millen was the pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack a target at Brest. During the attackhe was severely wounded by anti-aircraft fire and throughout the remainder of the flight was unableto use his left arm. Sgt. Carr, the observer, then took the -pilot's seat in order that he could applyan improvised tourniquet. During this operation he also controlled the aircraft, and under thesegreat difficulties undoubtedly saved the pilot's life. Again changing places, Sgt. Millen returned to thecontrols and, although he collapsed several times on the way back, he succeeded in bringing his air-craft safely to a home station. Both airmen dis- played great courage, determination and devotionto duty of a high order. Roll of Honour Casualties sustained by the Fleet Air Arm inH.M.S.
