Hermes, which, in- cidentally, was the first ship to be de- signed as a carrier, had the unpleasant task of bombing the new French battle- ship Richelieu at Dakar. France's collapse also made it necessary for the Ark Royal's machines to fly off and attack French ships in Oran harbour and those units on passage to Toulon. Six bomb or torpedo hits were made on the battleship Dunkerque at her moor- ings, and others were registered on the Strasbourg at sea. Courageous and Glorious having been lost, we now have in commission H.M.S. Argus, Eagle, Hermes, Furious, Ark Royal, and Illustrious.
