RYUJO (JAPAN) : 24 aircraft, 7,100 tons. Length, 548ft. Width, 70ft.40,000 H.P. Completed 1933. Speed, 25 knots. Complement, 600 men. laid out in the conventional manner with the navigating bridge, smoke stack and superstructure on the starboard side. On the forward round down there are two cata- pults for use when not under way, or in case of damage to the flying deck. Hangarage for a maximum of 70 machines is provided for on two decks, and a lift is in- stalled at either end to take the machines to and from the flight deck. The ship is armour-plated, although, of course, it cannot ,, have anything like the thick belts usually fitted to cruisers of the same tonnage. The deck armour is probably in the region of 3in. thick. For protection the Germans have mounted 28 guns of 100 mm. and 180 mm., in addition to several batteries of four 37 mm. guns also mounted in armoured turrets. In the hull are fitted the usual work- shops, stores and magazines. Design of aircraft carriers has settled down to refinement of the basic layout of Courageous and Glorious, and, like the rest of the world, Germany has copied England. The chief advantage carrier- borne aircraft have over land- based machines is the speed at which they can be brought into action. This has been proved very use- ful on many occasions in the present war, when fighters have been required urgently to handle a surprise bombing attack. There is also the added safe- guard of being under the corn-Draft, 15ft. KAGA (JAPAN) : 60 aircraft. 26,900 tons. Length, 715ft. Width, 102ft. Draft, 22ft. 91,000 H.P. Geared turbines.Completed 1928. Speed, 23 knots. Complement, 1,400 (approx.) men. Armament : ten 8in., sixteen 4.7m. A.A. AKAGI (JAPAN) : 50 aircraft. 26,900 tons. Length, 763ft.Speed, 28^ knots. Armament : ten 8in., twelve 4.7m. A.A. Width, 92ft. Draft, 21ft. 131,200 H.P. Completed 1927. Originally designed as a battle cruiser.
