Hong-Kong Defence AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR ROBERTBROOKE-POPHAM, C.-in-C. Far East, iscarrying out his first inspection of the area under his command. After visiting Hong-Kong, he said that any ideathat it could be captured in a few days or weeks was erroneous. R.A.F. V.C. Killed THE latest casualty communique includes thename Q[ Sgt. Gray, V.C.. among airmen pre-viously missing and now presumed killed in action. Sgt. Giay was decorated with F/O. Garland fortheir part in destroying a vital bridge during the tattle of France. Five machines made the attackand only one returned, but the bridge was smashed. R.A.F. Self Help CERVING members of the lioyal Air Force are*J amongst the most generous "subscribers to the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund—the Memorial Fundwhich assists past and present members of the R.A.F. in case of distress. During the quarter ended in September last atotal of £4,357 was received by the Fund from serving personnel of R.A.F. Headquarters andCommands at home and abroad. The largest single donation, nearly one thousand pounds, jcamc fromBomber Command, and a nearly equal sum was given by the personnel of Technical TrainingCommand. Overseas donations are represented in a gift ofnearly £270 from the R.A.F. in the Middle East a,nd Palestine; ,£73 from Iraq; £67 from the FarP; £60 from India, and £19 from the terranean. TUCK, D.F.C.—No. 257-- Squadron.—This officer has commanded his sqtiad- ron with great success and his outstanding leader-ship, courage and skill have been reflected in its • high morale and efficiency. Since 4th Oetobei.i 1S40. he has destroyed four hostile aircraft, bring- ing hie, total victories to at least eighteen. ". BAB TO THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS. Act. Fit. Lt. .J. C. DUNDAB. D.F.C.— A. A.F.,:r No. 609 Squadron.—Flight Lieutenant Dundas has r. continued 1o engage the enemy with outstanding_ success and has IH>\V destroyed nt least twelve of their aircraft and damaged many more. On oneoccasion he pursued IUI enemy aircraft from Win- '•'•'" Chester to Cherbourg, finally destroying it. Hehas shown a magnificent fighting spirit which has inspired the other members o! his flight. DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.Sqn. Ldr. M. V. BLAKE.—No. 234 Squadron.— Sqn. Ldr. Blake has displayed fine qualities ofleadership and has personaiiy di strnyed five, enemy aircraft. By his splendid example he has set ahigh standard to his fellow pilots. V Fit. Lt. B. DRAKE.—No. 421 Flight.-ln October,v, 1940. this officer carried out u reconnaissance 1 which proved of great value. Ho ha> :;t all times displayed fine qualities of leadership and pcr-severnnce. He has destroyed at least four enemy aircraft. P/O. E. S. MAKES.-NO. 152 Squadron.-Pilot OUT FOR SCALPS : The Curtiss Tomahawk which Lord Beaverbrook, in arecent broadcast, described as a good, reliable, straightforward job. Officer Murrs has participated in numerous patrolsagainst the enemy and he has led his flight with great skill and coolness. He has destroyed atleast six hostile aircraft. P/O. W. D. WILLIAMS, K.A.F.V.R.—No. 152Squadron. —This officer has shown great keenness in his engagements against the enemy, and hasdestroyed at least five of their aircraft. He has attacked a superior number of hostile aircraft,single banded, on several occasions. DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL.Sgl. D. A. S. MCKAY.—No. 421 Flight—This airman bas shown fine skill and tenacity in aircombat and has carried out valuable reconnaissance duties. He has destroyed at least eight enemy air-craft. Squadron Leader James Richmond GORDON- FlNLAYSON.Squadron Leader Deryck Cameron STAPLETON, A.F.C.Captain Brian John Lister BOYLE, NO. 1 Squad- ron, South African Air Force.Squadron Leader BATESON receives his award for the brilliant leadership of his squadron since Sep-tember, when the enemy invaded Egypt. He has led his squadron on raids on thirty-six occasions,often having to force his way through large forma lions of enemy fighters.Squadron Leader GORDON-FINLA\SON, who is the son of General Gnrdon-Finlayson, has commanded abomber squadron in (he Middle East for some con- sideiable time, lie has led over forty raids andreconnaissances over enemy territory. Recently he displayed amazing skill and courage in gettinghis aircraft back over friendly territory after one engine had been shot up and the other damaged.He landed on a stretch of sand only twenty yard., wide.Squadron Leader STAPLETON, who has shown con- sistent skill and daring in operations from the out.,break o£ war, was on one occasion leading a raid on an enemy target, in Eritrea. They were intercepted south of Massawa by enemy fighters who succeeded in putting an engine of one of our aircraft out of. action. The pilot of the aircraft was forced to leave the formation and tried to escape.He was followed by enemy fighters and eventually compelled to land in enemy territory. MeanwhileSquadron Leader Stapleton ordered the remainder <if the formation to continue with him and attacktheir targets. Having successfully done thi3 he re- turned to search for the missing aircraft. It wasdiscovered and Squadron Leader Stapleton landed alongside and rescued the crew after they hadburnt their papers and aircraft. Captain BOYLE, of the South African Air Force,on one occasion succeeded in takins off from a waterlogged aerodrome in order to asfist his squad-ron commander, who was being attacked by eight enemy fighters. The squadron commander »-a<ultimately shot down, but Capt. Boyle continued in fight although wounded and covered with oil. Hi-engine subsequently became so damaged thjii he was compelled to land. By skilful evasive act; ••,and brilliant handling of his aircraft he sucreck- ! in returning to liis nwn side of the frontier ainllanded his aircraft beside our troops.
