APRIL 17TH, 1941 Advertisements vii. -H. ALUIIIIIUI' ON ACTIVE SERVICE Merchant Ships in Cmtioy, a painting by CHARLES PEARS, K.O.I. ire Peace and War... Everyone naturally gives aluminium credit for lightness but its strength has, perhaps, not been so widely appre- Kted. The merging of these two contrasting qualities, lightness and strength, marked an important forward movement in metallurgy before the war, offering as it did definite prospects of reducing the burden of excessive weight in factory plant and in equipment of the road, rail and marine transport industries. Hostilities have deferred these peace- time developments. Aluminium is doing sterner work in the air, on land, at sea, and under the sea. There is conclusive evidence everywhere of the vital role this versatile metal is taking in the Nation's war effort. Problems concerning the use of aluminium in aircraft construction are continually being investigated in our Research and Development Depart- ment. Consultations are invited.
